I never got to drive my MK1 all that much but the registration was just a digit or two on from the works cars in a small book I had about rally Escorts. A paperback about the size of a Ladybird book. I'm going to hazard a guess that one of you guys owns a copy? I sold that shell for £150 to a chap near Bideford.

I regularly bought my MK2's from the classifieds in Motoring News. The best was a yellow RS2000 with all the right bits, except an LSD, for £700. I went to Wales and he picked me up from the station in it, before I drove home to London. It was such a fun car to own and drive. I've always had cars like the Escorts, where being nimble with great handling meant more than air con and electric windows. I loved my E30 M3 for the same reason.

The E30 carried on where the Escort left off - the proper RWD one that is. Values of these have gone silly and I reckon nice E36 318Ti Compacts will tag on before very long. Not 30 grand obviously but they won't be £1500 forever.

Nice 325i Sports have already sailed past 20 grand.

Quick ! rolleyes

My older brother had a K plate 2lt Cortina Gt, wel quicker than my Twin Cam !

Unbelievably over rated !
As all the Escorts are, weve had em all, if theres ones worth having its a late Mk1 Rs2000, at least these had enough power to pop a halfshaft!

A lot of people talking here who obviously were't there , and talking through there beer goggles

You just had a fked Twink laugh (and many were by then)... as my P-plate Cortina Mk.3 GT 2.0 wasn't even quicker than my Mexico, let alone quicker than any of the 3 x 1974 RS2000's I owned (or the Twin Cam)
And a Mk1 RS2000 definately didn't have enough power to pop a halfshaft unless it had a lot of engine mods (it only 2 bhp more than the Cortina GT 2.0)
Anyway, RS Escort's were not for going fast in straight lines, they were for going sideways in biggrin

My dads secretary's boyfriend brought a new RS 2000 from Peacocks and broke 3!
maybe crap driving/leadfoot etc but broken!
My Twin cam would do about 100 flat out , about the same as my Mexico, the only road Escort that actually was slightly scary was a brand new RS 2000 which was unrated to full RS3100 spec , this belonged to a guy who with his brother built The Marshen Power boat in New Romney Kent, The Sleep Family were Spud Farmers, who had a side line in B and C class offshore race boats,
We were a main dealer for these and sold loads!

That that was a quick Escort!

Can't agree with that.

If I had the money and multiple garage space, I'd have another one in a heartbeat. The only one of all my past cars I would have another of.

So do I (been lucky enough to have driven several RS3100 Capri's back in the day) but, yes, not in an Escort....the Pinto was heavy enough in the front of a Mk1 let alone dropping a heavy old Essex into it, which weighed 50kg more than a Pinto...and 50kg more in the engine bay of a Mk1 is just lunacy.

Lovely.......Modena/Green stripes was one of the nicest RS2 colour combinations when new. Back in the 80's though none of the stripe reproducers had ever managed to accurately reproduce the correct slightly metallic dark green of the original Ford stripes.....and today I bet there's not an original stripe car left to get a sample to do so now with the better technology now available frown

I have to admit that it was, of all the BMW's I had, my favourite in the day.

The lad I sold my Mk1 RS2000 to, broke a shaft after a week. It was standard other than having a Mk2 RS2000 exhaust manifold/system. He was most upset and was apparently going to get in touch about it. My mate, who he was moaning at pointed out that we had been behind him in traffic a few days before and attempting (badly) to do burnouts on the high street would do that kind of thing!! Never heard any more

You mean a BDA Twin Cam wink Must admit, it makes me grimace listening to those down changes, why people cant learn to Heel and Toe properly in cars like that is beyond me!

As Marks says, not a Twin Cam, its a RS1600 with a BDA not a Lotus TC.
