Looks very much like a Firenza front on with the perpex covers, not a bad idea TBH, as the lights were quite expensive even in the 80's!

I have been informed, that this POA [ don't you just hate that!!!! ] 72 twink used to belong to JK ??

This one....?

https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1228667

While never saying never, when it comes to old Escorts..........I'd want to see serious evidence of this back story, seeing as the advert is very short of photo evidence of the car as is to back up that story.

The fact that its Sebring Red is a question mark, as this would have to have been a built up from a bare shell after Sept/Oct 1972 and I'd be interested to know what the VIN is if a real Boreham customer build, especially as there is no VIN plate in the photo's, but does appear to have what could be a AVO build plate, or service shell plate on the slam panel. Did Boreham really do full customer builds given the extensive works Escort programme at that time?

Yep, that one. Thinking about it, i agree, i doubt Boreham would entertain that sort of build, but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It appears to be nothing really special in build other than having a TC engine, 12 months plus after the production line of the Twink finished.......and the build for this would be right in line with the AVO Special Build facility at the time, and I'm sure any approach to Boreham (you'd have to have VERY good contacts) would once established this was pretty much a Mex/RS16 with a Rally Pack would have directed said enquiry to AVO. Its even likely that they may have fitted a TC engine as well into a Special Build RS1600 for a price, if that really was what the customer wanted?

As said, never say never but without paperwork evidence etc., I'm skeptical based on advert.

Nice looking car, and appears to be have been done very correctly....apart from the silly Lotus badge on the front grille, which always surprises me, in so many otherwise very correct restorations, that people then going and do something so obviously wrong!

The engine though clearly needs a rebuild with those terrible RR numbers..... eek

Exactly,,,, 97 bhp,,,,,,,,,,, mind you were they not rated at 105 ? so not a huge loss if its not been touched for a while. I agree though, if it were mine a rebuild and mild upgrade to around 130 would make it come alive.

I don't think its even 97hp, given it says the rwhp was only 64...!!!

I've seen bog standard Mexico's make more that back in the day, so I reckon that's more like 80-85 at the flywheel........so I'd say its well fked..!

Also doesn't say much about about Aldon's 'corrected' flywheel hp numbers either.......which is why 'corrected' numbers should be ignored, and only even look at the at the wheel figures.

If the engine wasn't porked, I'd say circa £50k.....although, if its spent its whole post restoration life as a trailer queen show car, no one might have ever realised about the boat anchor under the bonnet...?

I had to go back to the ad to re-read it after you posted that, and because I stopped reading at the 64.5hp at the wheels in the ad and didn't read any further, as I was laughing so much by then.....and I had missed that little gem of utter garbage...... banghead

Quite amazing really, that they have included utter drivel like that, and yet they mention as if its a good thing, the appalling dyno figures which prove the engine is in a very poor condition.

Clearly Silverstone auctions don't have many 'car people' work for them, writing this out this BS.

What do you think a "good" rebuild on a twin cam is these days? £5k?

Edited

I see burton still sell heads (£3600), blocks (£2700), cranks (£1600+) etc which is quite impressive really.

No idea to be honest, am way too out of touch with engine build prices, especially with the new head castings now that weren't around when I had mine, neither are the go-to TC engine builders from that era that I knew, most of the Lotus-Cortina race engine people today were not around when I was dabbling in them, apart from the legend that is John Wilcox.

I would think you'd need to double that figure of £5k though, although, maybe that would get you a strip and stock rebuild with not needing anything else, if the head was good enough to start with, but I think you'd still a bill for 7.5k min for a decent TC build by a reputable TC specialist.

For a decent rally spec engine, probably 12-15k I would think?

I can,t see why, so long as the main components are sevicable it should cost more than 5k for a twink rebuild, so long as you know a good engine builder that doesn't take your trousers down !

It's like those 'complex' BDA's that you could take apart with a knife and fork. They're incredibly simple by modern standards.
