A couple of W124 Mercs, an E34 5 series, half a facelift Sierra and big bumper Golf make me think this is late '88/89?

Or trolley bus racing. The techical issues were insurmountable though. Shame really.
I thought trolleybuses were killed off by the financial pressures of re-investment and lower diesel running costs before oil price rocketed. Seems very short-sighted now.

Many other countries kept their systems:

Trolleybuses Galore said:
There are still 340-350 trolleybus systems around the world, despite significant numbers of closures during the late twentieth century. In particular the UK became completely trolleyless (except for museums) in 1972, unfortunately just before the energy crises of the 1970's and the upsurge of Green awareness which may have saved them. It may surprise many people from the western world how many systems there are, and that during the 1990's, for example, more systems opened (37) than closed (29).

I'll have you know once warmed up they smoke very little! irked

Anyway, the Trabis are carry DDR plates so with the large amount (relatively) of Western stuff, I'm going to say this is 1990+ but before reunification. There would be no Western stuff in the East prior to the fall of the wall. Or none you'd notice.

Saporoshez I think. And there's an Opel Kadett D-series in the 2. row.

Indeed.

And some countries/cities have even re-introduced them in recent, or even not so recent years, San Francisco being one such city, which introduced them about 20 years ago.

Bradford had them til early 70s, if they'd hung on a few more years they'd have been kept, but I think the buses were very old so would have needed significant investment.

The San Francisco trolleybus system opened on October 6th, 1935.

This popped up on the Newcastle Upon Tyne Chronicle page today- Self explanatory title c/o Mirror pix.

I grew up in the North East and remember well the Skinheads and Greasers. Hoardes of gangs used to travel down to Whitley Bay at the weekend and many a fight ensued along the way. Station Road and Marine Avenue were jammed packed from the beach all the way back to the railway station. The police used to patrol in Hillman Imps and carried tasers....no ...correct that...alstation dogs which were far more effective.

Was that really over 50yrs ago? Grey matter stirs...Levi Stay Press, two tone obviously with a pair of shiny brogues...

We used to call the Police Van the Meat Wagon. H&S would have a field day seeing those lads in the back of the (Imp) Commer Van laugh
