Before 102 Petty France was built, you can only just see the top of Big Ben now:

1980s traffic light Grand Prix. It's a fair guess who was 3rd, not sure about P1 and P2!

One day I'll have a pint in that pub.

I should get out more/I'm old.

My grandad had a cafe very near that pub on the other side of the road. It was still there in the '80s but there were some alterations in the area because of Thameslink and I think it was demolished.

Hard to believe but my grandma used to make his lunch for him and take it to him from their house in Battersea. Seemed odd, what with him running a cafe. Apparently he would give waifs and strays a hot dinner if they had no money. One day he arrived home with some chap he'd met in the cafe and said he'd be staying until he got back on his feet again. This would have been late 1920s - different time eh?

The Cav is newer and the pilot is wearing a tie - he's clearly late for a sales meeting in Reading so he'll be in second before Cortina man has even lifted the clutch. The Ital has ladders on the roof so he's probably still there now but my money is on the blue Cav on the second row. He's in a post '85 facelift with the egg crate grill and I reckon he'll have take P1 before the next set of lights.

What's that under the bridge behind the van? Tercel?

I'm sure it isn't one, but don't forget that there was an Ital 2.0HLS auto that "accelerated from 0-60 faster than a SAAB 900 GLS" and was "styled in Turin by ItalDesign".

Original TV ad from 1981 (which lulls you into a false sense of anticipation because it opens with a Maserati Merak):

I assumed that the Ital was likely to be heading left & over Blackfriars so not a contender.

Being Essex biased my money's on the Ford.
