No takers in almost 4 hours so here's another view. It's a 1928 Delage DR70 Saloon with Weymann body.

Is this the unidentified car albeit with a different coachbuilder?

Not unless they changed the radiator grille, which would have been highly unlikely.

Radiator grille of another Delage DR. Is that any closer?

Yes, it's closer (and the right colour), but I still don't think it's right. Look at the way the bright surround on the mystery car curves on its lower edge - in the colour shot it is straight. Radiator grilles were one of the few ways cars could be identified back then, so manufacturers evolved a design and stuck with it.

All that being said, you've done better than I have in trying to identify this car...

There is a hint of Hispano-Suiza about it, but I don't think the radiator shape is quite right.

Don't forget that a lot of middle to top range cars were available in chassis form for fitting with a body of choice, so similarity in bodywork means nothing much.

I think there's a chance that the Scottish buyers of the time were a parochial lot. Why buy French when there were plenty of Scottish marques?

Arrol Johnston for me.

I haven't got anywhere with identification either, but the solid wheels on the mystery car make me think it's not an exotic - which a Delage etc. would have been.

The hint of the two words on the grill still puzzles me.

I have wondered if they were added by the proud owner. Other 2-word marques were Angus-Sanderson and Arrol-Aster (it's definitely not one of those).
Maybe it's not the make of car at all but a witty quip from the owner rather like Darren and Sharon.

Interesting; the enclosed/cowled in dumb irons are similar but not the same and the radiator cowl doesn't look quite right.

The disc wheels seem more of a continental thing, certainly 4 studs are; most UK vehicles of that size had 5 or 6 stud hubs at the time.

Could even get away with locking three kids in the boot and allowing them to wave out of an open window eek

How times have changed...

The 16/6 had suicide rear doors though

I do enjoy a mystery car thread smile

Doors are a feature of the bodymaker not Austin.

But as hidetheelephants mentioned, falls down on stud pattern. Austin 16/6 had 6 studs. Mystery car in photo only has 4...

I am sure it is French - the wheels and bodystyle are a give away. My feeling is its one of the last De Dion Boutons (they went out of businss in 1932) and that is the script on the radiator.
