Weird looking Series 2 with a Series 1 front end …

Why would you do that? hehe

Jag on ebay
I don't think it really a Series 2 front end; they look like Series 2 wings (higher bumper fitting still present), wrong indicator units, no grilles under inner headlamps. It looks as if they've simply fitted a bumper lower down, a Series 1 grille and filled in the gaps.

What's the car behind, front looks like an R107 Merc SL or SLC, rear less so.

Probably a trip to the scrappy was called for after a front end accident.
I think the ad mentions that the car comes with the original S2 bonnet too. Perhaps just rusted hinges and swapping seemed simpler.

S-Type
For a badly-running 3.4 auto (with a defective gearbox), that's had an engine rebuild with second hand parts (and is noisy), a bodged-up body restoration with doors, bonnet and boot not fitting well, a poor quality paint job and an interior needing work I think that's all of its money and the type of car that I wouldn't go near at any price.

A really good 3.8 manual at £25k would be a bargain in comparison. wink

I didn’t say it was any good! No decent S-Type is going to be that little money …

Edit: but having given the ad a decent look through, I’d say you’re being overly harsh on it and can’t see some of the things you refer to mentioned. For someone looking for an S-Type to tuck away and get into shape, this would not have been a bad car. It made half Bonham’s estimate … the interior looks pretty good to me - the engine you could work on along with the body.

Although having seen in person, a MINT Mk2 go through ACA in January for not much over £16k, I know what you mean …

I'm sure that green on green one was £13/15k a year ago at Overbrook and then it was suddenly for sale for about five grand more. Not a fan of that colour interior myself. I take it these were in the auction?

Yes, in the auction. There was a very nice S3 4.2 with a tweed interior which went for £8k, my mate had his eye on it but yesterday but didn't bid...

Meanwhile I was drooling like an idiot over some of the Italian stuff hehe

There's a condition report in the documents that lists all the faults I've mentioned.

IMHO cars like this cost far more than they're worth to sort out. What price an engine and gearbox rebuild and a decent paint job ?

Still, I hope it works out for whoever bought it. smile

At the NEC - £37,500. Surely not an original colour?

Yes, a report which the guy had done when he bought it eight years ago since when a considerable amount of money has been spent. It's not perfect, a long off from that, but for the money I think it's a good buy.

Lavender Coupe

What are people's views on this car? Is that a fair price for it - is that what they're going for - or is it a decent respray (engine and glass in) and everything else not up to that standard - I hate seeing rusty engine components in a freshly-painted bay!

The report was done AFTER the restoration was completed. Clearly there has been little or no further expenditure on bodywork and it remains a badly painted car with a series of patchwork repairs.

The engine gave up the ghost shortly after the "restoration" and the poor owner forked out nearly £10k on an engine rebuild plus various other items.

The rebuilt engine lasted for just over 3000 miles before giving up the ghost again and being rebuilt again by the same company and another £10k invoice !

The engine has done less than 1000 miles in the eight years since the second rebuild (according to the advert) and is not running correctly.

The documented history of this car illustrates the very point I'm making.

A car in this condition is a potential money-pit and a very high risk purchase (at any price). I respect that you have a different take on it.

Let's just agree to disagree. beer

Fair enough! beer

Suffice to say the owner bought the car on the strength of that report so went in with his eyes open ... I don't think he's received a great service since for the money he's paid ...

Got to be worth a look I'd say - personally I'd prefer a darker interior to go with the Lavender exterior, but it looks in great nick. Manual too which is rare.

First thing I'd do would be to put a set of 'raised digit' reflective plates on it like on my old S2 Saloon...

OK.

So.....these cars were absolute rust heaps. Most of them were well and truly fked 35 years ago - there is nowhere that they don't or won't rust. Mark II's were rust prone but the XJ is a whole new league.

That doesn't look a bad car and it clearly has a decent history. These cars have all gone rusty and been repaired so it's pot luck as to how long it will last before it erupts again.

Should these cars have come with the Kent alloys for those in the know?

Yes, they were an option at the time.

That green over green car was at Historics last summer and didn't sell then either. I can admit I'm very tempted by it.

The MOD S1 Daimler did well I thought.

The S3 with the tweed interior was one of my favourites and I was hoping the project S1 E-Type was going to go cheap rofl

I kept egging my mate on to bid on the tweedy S3, it was gorgeous - he used to work at 'the Jag' and probably had a hand in building it...

The Warwick Grey Mk1 2.4 really captivated me too, very rakish with its original rear wheel spats...
