The Variant was hardly a runaway success, European cars rusted just as much as Brits, in many cases worse. I saw a TV doc the other day showing how contemporary UK motor manufacturers (management and shop floor) who were excited about joining the Common Market because it would open the market for them. Didn't go well. I wonder whether, if we'd never joined, our indigenous motor industry would have fared better?
