It was quite a common thing, at larger stations at any rate; Glasgow Central had a platform-side pick-up/set-down area like that until the most recent refurbishment/reshuffle(perhaps 5 years ago), it's all blocked off to traffic now.
I think you still can in Edinburgh. I was there a few months ago and I'm sure I saw taxis going down the ramp into the station but looking online it seems they stopped it years ago. Would be nice as you wouldn't have to step outside.williamp said:
A couple more for you: Heathrow in 1964
Might be a staff car park as flying in those days was still a glamarous, expensive wah to travel
Also, oxford car park
Yeah it looks modern, but look again: lots of Rovers, and a fiat maera and 993 porsche. If the X5 was brand new, the photo could be 19 years old!!

The Said Business School premises in the background was only completed in 2001, and it doesn't look particularly 'new' in that picture.Yeah it looks modern, but look again: lots of Rovers, and a fiat maera and 993 porsche. If the X5 was brand new, the photo could be 19 years old!!
It does highlight just how much car ownership trends have changed in a relatively short space of time though- given the diverse range of ages on show, compared to the roads today.
It could also be that a large number of those cars had been parked up for years- the owners having decided it was much easier to walk back out of Oxford...

There's an XC90 in that pic so it's 2003 at the earliestIt does highlight just how much car ownership trends have changed in a relatively short space of time though- given the diverse range of ages on show, compared to the roads today.

A couple of old bangers at Old Oak Common loco depot in West London, 4th January 1969... this area is now the site of the Crossrail concrete depot...
I went past OOC a couple of days ago into Paddington and I was surprised to see even more of the site behind hoardings, presumably ready for re-development? RichB said:
