86p per gallon......I remember those days
£6.85 a gallon? That's more than it is now, probably due to the shortage as per the sign.RichB said:

Whilst you lot discuss petrol prices and inflation ,I've answered my own question.
Yes ,it's a Simca.
Yes it is...even if nobody is listening to you!! ??Yes ,it's a Simca.
As for petrol prices...in 1956 standard BP regular was 4/6d per gallon so 4 gallons cost my father 18/- and yet his wages as a “well paid” salesman for the SWEB was around £6 per week, that means it was roughly 14% of his wages. Today maybe he would be earning £600 per week so that petrol should cost about £84 but in fact it is more like £25 so in real terms, much cheaper!????

In the case of the GT40, a large number of the genuine articles are still active and I'd like to think still could be long into the future. We can but hope anyway.
A golden oldie, Leightonstone High Road in the late '70s...
Leytonstone! Where I was born and live!A golden oldie, Leightonstone High Road in the late '70s...
To the left of that shot was the showroom of Hills of Leytonstone, a great little classic car dealer in the mid to late '80s. Went years ago and is now just anonymous looking flats.

There's quite a big difference between 76, 77 and 78 if you run it through an inflation calculator, but the rate of inflation was pretty high back then. As the Fiat is an S reg I've taken it as 77, but 86p in 75 is £8.53 today.
The one I just used, says £1 in 1978 equates to £5.57 in 2018......so, the one you used must be very pessimistic to equate 86p to over 8 quid over the same time frame!!??I think the petrol station pic is 1979 when there was a petrol shortage resulting from the price of Iranian oil doubling overnight. Quite how that caused a shortage I don't know, but I do remember a massive 'crisis' over it.
Random recollection from the oil crisis before it - 1973 I think - was the massive drop in value of large engined cars. I was a regular in BCA Cardiff in those days. How about a MK4 Zodiac Executive around 5 years old, selling for 12 quid! Empty tank mind!

Indeed, a clue in the photo too. And two Viva HCs, an estate and a saloon.I found some old negatives from school projects and various things from around 1979/80/81 the other day. There are very few car-related ones, but here's a couple. First, an XJC (last taxed 1985) and a 3-series (last taxed 1990), possibly from a holiday in Bognor Regis:
Next, a shot from behind the local market, with a truck in it. Doesn't half look grim in black and white.
Finally, I think this is from a test film while being taught about depth of field, judging by other images with it. Local school staff car park.
