For your information i do have a clue on whats rare or not, the jag was rare, i new that, so was the 1928 dodge standard 8 a few years ago, all the mk1 and mk2 granadas that race are rare, xj6's, rover p5's, p4's, toyota crowns etc etc just i like to see a rare car on the banger track every now and then
What's the attraction in making a rare car rarier?

plonker751 said:
from all your posts and comments ive been able to 'sum you up' and you seem jealous, you didnt like the idea of the car being bought by banger drivers, so instead of doing what alot of the other people on this forum are doing, which is come to facts with the idea and give me support, your just bhing and moaning about it. At first it didnt bother me too much, as i knew alot of people were going to be abit hacked off with me, but your now resorting to insulting my intelligence etc..... childish in my opinion mate.
Why would I be jealous about it? I'll agree on the point of about the car being bought by a banger racer but that's just my opinion.

You're a decent bloke I just don't know why you would to banger race a Jaguar XK150 that could have benefited another XK. Sure, it's different to the usual fodder you see at banger racing but does an XK really need to be used?

Jesus Retrocosworth, please get to grip with the reality of the situation. This was a serious wreck, with no identity, had been partially dismantled, and was frankly past saving as a true classic. It could only have been sold for spare parts in the condition it was in. Why the previous owner decided to dismantle what was potentially a £20,000 car is beyond our ken, but he did so and "Plonker" bought a bag of bits, which he has rebuilt to race. I love Jaguars, am immersed in their history, have seen so many go to the breaker's yard that could and should have been saved, but here this is not the case. This is a spare parts bin, not a car. I admire Plonker for waht he has done and so should you. You seem hell bent on defending the indefensible here, trying to justify "saving a car" that frankly no longer existed.

I cant really explain this one, and it has NOTHING to do with making a rare car rarer, unless you have banger raced yourself then you wont understand, i no exactly how this is going to sound, and can already hear your reply, but ive never had such a buzz when i pulled that xk150 onto the track for the 1st time, lit the rear tyres up all the way up the straight and hear my name shouted over the speakers. The only way i can really explain the attraction is the amount of attention you get when you have a car that stands out against the xj6-mk10 jag norm. The car was basically a wreck, ive saved everything that was worth keeping that i didnt need to race with, which wasnt alot due to the amount missing when we got the car and it is all for sale.

I wanted to baner race the car because that was really all it was fit for before it went in the crusher, the wings and rear panels were maybe saveable but i decided against savin it and raced it, would you rather we sent it straight to the crusher then?

Well done for standing up for yourself Plonker. Anyone who says this car should be restored should buy it themselves and restore it.

I remember the outcry when some old POS that had once transported Winston Churchill got raced. Who cares?

Imagine how many cars Churchill must have travelled in during his lifetime. Should they all be saved for the good of the nation? Who should pay for it?

Indeed. Plonker has mentioned the previous owner would not sell the car for anything *but* scrap anyway. Live and let live.

...... but if you check out the price of an old buff log book to use as an identity for a replica, like a C-type kit, then you'll get one hell of a shock. Just the bit of paper can fetch thousands now, and see the post at the top referring to the wreck that was sold for over £16,000. No, a wreck, with some matching numbers, plus the log book is now a minimum of £10,000. A lot to go banger racing with! Just look here:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Jaguar-XJ6-4-2-engine-Log-Bo...
That lot sold just £100.

A bad example I admit since it is but an XJ and taxable but still used by some boys to build replicas; but try and buy an XK identity, above all an XK120. Prices are very high.

If you want to know more about your engine then try looking on

http://www.jag-lovers.org/xk-lovers/library/engine...

On an XK150 the engine number should be stamped on the head (on the vertical face at the front above the spark plug valley) and on the block above the oil filter. Later engines had it stamped on the exhaust side of the block where the bellhousing mounts, I presume it can be seen with the bellhousing in place, but I've not looked (long engines are a bit unwieldy).

Is it possible this was a stolen car? hence ID removed which is why the owner wanted it cut up.

Seems strange that they sold the interior, doors, bonnet and bootlid, but left the wings on which were probally the most valuable parts.

no mate, i can say 100% sure this was not a stolen motor, the bloke we got it off has loads of old classics, mk2 jags, mk1's etc all over in spain as he moved, reason for bonnet on ebay being in spain , so maybe he didn wanna take it with him?
But it was NOT a stolen motor, i can assure you that.

Better to go out fighting than be dragged slowly over the weighbridge.

Good luck in your next race!

thanks for the supportive comment, think things may have calmed down abit by the looks if things at the moment, no doubt it will all start up again when i race the ja again, or when my next 'classic' hits the track at the end of this year or start of next.
