Off topic- whose car is/was this please?
All i can tell you is i took the photo at the raceing car show at olympia around 1971/2.The car may have been owned or sponsered by the Luton Motor Company or Lumo that did a lot of twin cam 1600E cortina convertions, plus 1600 mk1 escorts before ford made the mexico.

Didnt realise that those photos were so old. Never seen this Capri before, someone must remamber it ?
I remamber LUMO carrying out tuneing work to 3 Litre Capris, but do any Lumo cars survive ?

Nice, looks like it could almost have come straight from the First FordSports Speed Day at Brands Hatch in May 1970...which was won by the Late Great Piers Courage

Dont think those Rostyles are correct for a 3 Litre though .

Yes they are correct, left the factory with them.

Standard on 3000E's of the time and option extra's on cars late 1971, seen some 1600 GT XLR's with them.

I know it's a fact but I've never understood why Ford aficionados call the cars in this thread the Mk1 Capri when this was the first Capri. Anyone know the reason?

Because that's really a Ford Consul Capri, rather than a Ford Capri.

i.e it's a sub-model name for the coupe version of the Consul Classic, rather than a specific unique model range in it's own right.

Right, so you had the Ford Consul Cortina (early ones like my dad had), the Consul Capri and the Consul Classic, they also did a Ford Consul (Consul) if you see what I mean i.e. "The" Ford Consul but was it called the Consul Zephyr?. All very confusing in hindsight. Does anyone know the significance of the name Consul?

p.s. sorry to go off at a tangent but I thought I'd ask while there's a lot of knowledgeable Ford chaps present wink

No such thing as a Consul Zephyr.

The Consul was the bottom of the range with the 4 cyl engines and shorter length (in the Mk1 case) front end.
The Zephyr was the mid range car with the stright six engine, and the Zodiac was the top of the range, also with the six cyl engine. This was the case for Mk1 through to MkII cars.

IIRC, in most cases of each model type with a Consul version, it was the base version of that model...??

Yep and the consul was the base version of the Mk1 granada smile
i think Ford paid for the word so decided to use it as often as possable even if it was confusing just to get thier moneys worth laugh
i think Ford even thought about using the name before the corsair IE: consul corsair ?

Thanks chaps, I did some googling and yes it seems the Consul range at one epoint included the Capri, Classic, Cortina and Corsair! I also didn't realise there was a Zephyr, a Zodiac and a Zephyr Zodiac!

What we know as the Mk1 Capri (1969) only became known as the Mk1 when the Mk2 was introduced. By this time the 'Mk1' was very familiar, it had been heavily marketed and was a sales success.

By contrast the 'Classic' Capri (as most would now refer to it) was a bit of an oddity. An attempt to turn the Classic (not a sales success) into a kind of 'mini-Thunderbird'. The resultant 2+2 with a huge boot did not find many fans.

Consequently it was an almost forgotten blind-alley by the mid-seventies when Ford introduced the hatchback Capri, and marketed it as Capri II.

The weapon to have in the early 8os, my mum had 2 in the early 7os, VEG 97H, an Aubergine 3000GT and then a Gorgeous 71 J reg 3000E in Tawny Metalic.

I bought my first car ( EVC-289L , a beautifull Yellow 3000GT ) for £550 from a pal in jan 82 plus 500 quid to insure it. Did i have some sideways fun in that, i span it at 100 on a motorway and hit the crash barrier, wrecking the rear 1/4. in june 82 swapped it at a dodgy Shark/dealers in Croydon for a 69 Damson TR6 with a bent chassis, they saw me coming a mile away ! But i got my 550 back.

I also had OPU 534K,a green 3000E, KMK 845K,a Saphire Blue , 3000E and 3 others that i cant recall the reg nos of , inc a rare 1970 H-Reg Silver, but repainted black 3000GT, . None of these have survived, they were so common in the early 80s.
Currently restoreing this FORDSPORTS DAY black 3000E, the only known survivor of 16 cars .
I notice your car is advertised in car and classics

http://web1.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C157829/#

out of curiosity I remember this car coming up for sale on ebay several years ago same picture in advert , has anymore work been done to the car since then and its also fitted with a factory fitted webasto roof , not shown on any of the racers ,

not picking any holes just curious
