Here's my 1985 Reliant Scimitar SS1 which I've owned for 7 years or so & which has been on the road for the last 3. It's much modified with an 1800 Zetec replacing the 1600CVH engine. The suspension's been upgraded with poly bushes, shorter/stiffer springs & AVO shocks. The gearbox is the original Ford type 9 which is notchy when cold but fine when warmed up. I've also played with the interior & have fitted a pair of MX5 seats which are a great improvement over the originals but the seat bases are too tall, despite me giving both of them foamectomies, they're fine for me & the missus but anyone over 5'10"ish struggles to get comfortable in the car.
Due to underbonnet space constraints it's running a single Weber DGV, on an alloy banger racing manifold, with ignition by a Megajolt Lite Jr (MAP version). I had it tuned on Dennis Vessey's rolling road where it produced 108 bhp at the flywheel (about 89 bhp at the wheels) - I was told there would probably be a bit more power if I replaced the air filter & exhaust. Since being on the rolling road I've changed the air filter set up to the one you see below, but I haven't had chance to sort the exhaust (though I do have a much modified stainless steel ST170 manifold waiting in the garage). It's not the fastest car on the road but fast enough to get you noticed by the boys in blue (ask me how I know ), it's great fun to drive & the handling is terrific with very direct steering. It's firmly sprung so tends to crash about on rough(ish) roads but on the motorway it's fine as long as you can live with the noise - it's best on quiet A roads though where it's a complete hoot to hoon around in. I try & use it fairly regularly but I don't do many miles a year in it really. I have it on a limited mileage policy (3,000/year) but don't get anywhere near that & I've maybe done 3,000 miles in total in the 3 years it's been back on the road! So far it's been reliable (touch wood) without any breadowns & it's even reasonably economical in normal use (about 25mpg).
I have it taxed/insured throughout the year but usually put it away for winter as it's one of the early non-galvanized versions & will rust at the merest suggestion of salt + it doesn't have a heater fan (so no demister) at the moment which doesn't help either.
Am happy to answer any questions if you have them

I need to know more! What sort of money do these run at? Did you buy it in Japan?
Was just saying over in another thread that there's a whole spectrum of cars with vastly different pricing (and I'm talking only about KPGC10s). We saw mint examples that are topping £150k on the road here, but restoration projects significantly less. The car is due to board a ship in Tokyo, back end Nov. I'm blogging if you're interested at http://www.hakosukablog.wordpress.com.
got a fair bit of work to do on it, but it's going to be a great project.
