wheels are made of plastic
Discussion
The Citroen SM of the mid 1970s had glass reinforced epoxy resin wheels (Roues Resin) as an option - plastic by any standards. They were reinforced in the mounting stud area with steel inserts to spread the stresses. The wheels were tested by an independent lab and found to be satisfactory in all regards except mediocre kerbing resistance if I recall correctly. This is not rumour, I was working on steel plastics combination moulding processes at the time with a part-owned GKN company and I obtained a sample from a Citroen dealer in Edgware Road near Swiss Cottage, and had it x-rayed before cutting it apart to analyse the resin/glass content. The SM was a very low volume model so it was a small scale effort. It is a believed in some circles that they were carbon fibre but the one I pyrolised to weigh the fibre residue were about 65% glass fibre, not carbon.
