I didn't know .25 existed until this thread, so I feel enlightened, but not too tempted....
There is also a .20 - I used to have a Sheridan pump-action .20. Very accurate as there is no recoil, but am unsure if they are still available in this country. Here is a link to Sheridan

Just to add: am not sure if one would need a licence to use such a rifle in this country.

".20 calibre, the ideal compromise of velocity, trajectory and hitting power... undoubtedly the calibre best suited to typical airgun performance. Swiftly adopted by serious vermin controllers and my own personal favourite, the lack of choice of ammunition and the irregularity of supply of the best has always held back development of this exceptional calibre."

Interesting too... I'm just scouting around to see if they're available here.

I used to prefer using a .177 using domed pellets. Shot many a rabbit, squirrel etc.

Best target to use for practice was used shotgun cartridges. If you can consistently hit the metal end from 30+ yards then you are ready to go after bunnies !

Have to admit that in my days of hunting rabbits with an air rifle I too used .177. I've heard the .177 for feather and .22 for fur edict, but I worked on the basis that to kill something cleanly you had to hit it in the correct (relatively small) spot first. Due to it's flatter trajectory, I felt I could do this more consistently with .177.

Anyway those days are behind me now, as I use an even smaller calibre leaving the barrel at 2500fps to guarantee a swift kill.

lol.. that will teach em.

When I used to go shooting a friend of my Dads was telling me they were out on a farm where they regularly shot. He took out a hare which was sitting on a fence post or something.

With a .50 bmg.

Apparently the result was a nice pink puff followed by finding nothing much of it.

Overkill perhaps, but amusing nonetheless biggrin

I am planning an a full comprhensive get together with the gun, learn how it works, sights work, how to maintain it, then look in to how to use it, then work on hitting smaller and smaller targets. I have worked out three places I can shoot from at the site, paced them off.

Now I have paced them back out at the warehouse and will pratice them there, ideally research I have done says don't shoot anything til you can crack a 10p with confidence from your desired range.

Thats what I am planning on doing.

oh very mature. you'll note i said *if* that's what you were planning on doing.

hopefully you'll realise when you come to zero your scope and practice a few shots that it's not as easy as just lying the gun down and pulling the trigger. and then maybe you'll put a few weeks of practice in *before* hunting.

This looks nice!

Looks very nice actually. Is it crap though?

When not using a shotgun I'm shooting with a Webley Axsor, which has served me well for years, but more land and much more vermin means I'm tempted, very tempted, by an FAC .25. My hunting chum didn't rate it though. An FAC .22 maybe?

one guy in the club had one - lovely looking gun and great fun to shoot, but, for the money, you could get a PCP that's more accurate. i'd look at a 2nd hand daystate Mk3 or even a new air arms 400/410.

for 2nd hand - look at www.airgunbbs.com. also, www.airgunbuyer.com usually has a good selection of used guns, and a great selection of new ones. very pleasant to deal with too.

Thanks for that I'll have a look through...

Couple of questions... if I may...

PCP 'pre charged pneumatic' ? What's the difference between a carbine and a rifle?

I quite like using my little dive cylinder - some of these seem to need a cartridge....

That Career thing is talking to me - I do like a nice looking gun, one that's nice to handle, and it does look all of that....

the carbine is a little bit shorter than a full-length version of rifle. no less accurate, slightly easier to work with , but fewer shots from a charge.

all PCPs are filled with compressed air (and only air smile ) either from dive bottles or a hand (stirrup) pump.

the 'cartridges' i think you're referring to are brococks - no longer available for sale. if you mean the cylinder that actually stores the air, they have an adaptor that connects to the dive bottle.

this is my baby

Slightly sensitive as you were the one saying I am a st "if" I did that with out asking "if" that what I was planning on doing.

So its OK for me to say "if" you were touched as a child your now a crossdressing tranny fker ? no not really.

Please not the similes after the sentence indicating a wait for it......joke, that's what the little blue bloke is doing, it is not a Chinese man have a knuckle shuffle.

As regards what you "hopefully" think I am going to "maybe" do before I go hunting, maybe you should wind your neck in, stop being so patronising and condescending. I think I have shown here that I am taking this seriously and the last thing I want to do it hurt any animals, I need to get rid of them as they are becoming a nuisance and this way I can have a nice social summers evening and ( I have repeated this many times ) learn a new skill, emphasis being on learn.

Thanks for that Spydie...

The link didn't work, but a nice looking gun.

The Phoenix rifle looks a nice one too - tempted by a .22 and then presumably I could have it upgraded to FAC once I have the paperwork? I assume it's the same gun?

c'mon - let's give it a rest 'eh? i'm not trying to get into a fight.

the way you came across was - you were asking for info about getting your first gun.then you decided which you wanted to get and ordered/bought it all within a few days, then you say you picking it and going from there to clear rabbits.

so, i was not trying to be condescending, i was just pointing out that you (and everyone else) need practice to get good enough to hunt responsibly and humanely. the bunnies deserve no less smile. i apppologise if it was less than diplomatic - i could have phrased it differently.

our sport is also under constant threat from the anti's, so the last thing we need is someone who goes around having a shot at everything and anything (not saying this is what you were going to do, it's just not what we want).

so what do you say?

beer?

happy shooting.
