Most knuckle draggers down mine seem to take massive pride in their guns and leg pressing abilities, but do very little core work outside what is provided by squats.

Dont get me wrong, their 'guns' are to be revered, but they look like theyre carrying beer guts.
Squats with proper form will do wonders for core strength, especially if combined with deadlifts. Leg Presses on a static machine on the other hand smile
yes When I was steeplechase training my coach had me doing squats, deadlifts and clean&jerk with relatively light weights (3 sets of 8 reps of 70kg squats, 40kg dl, 30kg c&j) purely for core strength over the barriers.

look at the page on the right for part 2, if your interested of course. That guy is so physically strong and fit and for his size it just shows big guys can be quick and agile too. Awesome athelete that will dominate the heavyweight division in the UFC in the near future.
That's a superb video but the first 33 seconds look like the start of a porn film.

Are you the guys I see at the gym who lift weights slowly, wearing tiny vest tops, whilst gazing longingly at themselves in the oversized mirrors? Nice hehe
There are guys in the gym I use that really do talk about "working the guns" and are serious rofl

Never yet heard them talk about participating in competitive sport though...
No I'm the guy you see down the gym wearing t-shirt, shorts and trainers doing the same exercises as the vest wearers only without the self admiration and calling my biceps guns! laugh

I know what you're saying about the competitive sport thing though, the vest wearers never seem to be bothered about the footy on the tv at the gym and those that I've spoken to about any sport never really seem to have much to say!?

The newbie vest wearers are the best, everytime I see them it seems to be a chest or bicep night with the occasional shoulder set.

Oh and 99% of them wear jogging bottoms...wonder why!?wink

It was only his second ever mma fight against an ex world champion, did you see the fight? he was beating the sh*t out of Frank Mir, Mir even admitted after he was being hit so hard he was losing his vision and knew he had to do something quick then Brock made an amatuer mistake and left his leg out and the rest is history. He will learn from that and come back stronger, he is already a fantastic wrestler and easily the strongest guy in the mma world he just needs to gain some more experiance and ground skills. Time will tell i guess.
Yeh I was kidding mate.

As you say Mir was such a cocky tt beforehand saying he felt insulted he was picked ect. And lesnar really has come a long way from his visual bulk of wwf.

Very strong guy you could see that mir was just being thrown about by him. We will see, there are some very hard men in the sport Rampage jackson is a case hehe

Just because you lift weights doesn't mean you're fit, strong and healthy. I went through a few years where all I seamed to do was variations of presses and curls and started to notice how stupid I looked, how unflexible I was and generally unfit for sports and outdoor activities. Big muscles arn't 'cool' guys regardless of what mr 'Golds Gym' in his loud baggy trousers, muscle vest, weight belt and ankle boots says down the gym! Learn from the girls, they like people Becks and B.Pitt!

Not that I've changed my routine for the ladies but I now concentrate on real fitness like running, shuttles, circuits, HIIT and eating correctly!

This is real fitness

Me and a mate used to call our lot Team Inflatable.

Lots of self motivation, strutting around after a set to loosen up, general self loving.

As for training, I used to do a hell of a lot of leg, back and shoulder work. I'm far stronger than I look and seem to be noticeably stronger than others in lifting, carrying etc. In my head I think that core strength lasts with you for a long time, a strong back and legs should be good for the future if you do it properly.

I found Kayaking and rowing to be the best for me fitness wise, I am not a fan of cardio but at least with those training methods you get a muscular workout closer to lifting weights.

Excellent video, credit due to Lesnar for getting out of fat ballet and into something less artificial. He has the power and size, will and technique are more important one would think for UFC though.

Who was the massive black american guy who did kick boxing or even possibly UFC, absolutely enormous fellow.

I could never understand how anyone could fit him, a dropkick to the face might wake him up but I doubt it would do any harm haha.

Bob Sapp is the fella your on about, he is HUGE been in a few hollywood films too because of his size. He is massive in Japan, in loads of commercials and stuff. He was a crap fighter, just had huge size and would swing aimlessly at people trying to pummel them into the ground which worked against poor opponents but once paired up against a decent fighter he would get the sh*t kicked out of him. He once got hit so hard in the ribs he started to cry in the ring and quit, what a pussy! I think he still fights in a japan but he never was nor never will be a top class fighter. Definetly a big fella tho!

Update: I did the first training session yesterday, including the swimming and remained bang on pace for all of it bar the swimming (Haven't been swimming for about 8 years!). Leisurely breast stroke was the order of the day to make sure I stayed actively swimming for long enough! Gonna try a crawl tonight as there are no other exercises, just swimming today smile

http://www.crossfit.com/ for your cardio with lots of bodyweight stuff - find the video of 3 ladies doing ring work!!

Add in large complex weights - squat, deadlift, bench. Keep the squat deep, the bench pause & explode, deadlift must stop on the floor and explode up.

Make sure your cross fit has a decent amount of short sprint work e.g. 20-40m stuff.

If you have a field, park, pitch nearby, then worth doing a fartlek session once or twice a week in place of crossfit session

An MMA gym has just opened in the village my friend lives in, so we plan on going there a few times a week once the weather get's a bit crappy.

I used to kickbox, absolutely loved it but I'm avoiding martial arts that involve a lot of striking as it's just not practical in self defence situations.

Currently learning Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, which is more about rolling, grappling and submission cool

And you're much less likely to be prosecuted for restraining someone than you are for switching their lights off with a kick to the head hehe

A gay friend of my wife has just become single. He's a bit unhappy at the moment and I think he would like some company to pick him up a bit.

Thought this thread would be a good place to ask?

Actually, I was going to view that post as a wind up. Then I noticed you're in Kent. If he's looking for a workout partner I'll chat to him.

I'm not gay before anyone starts! hehe

I don't understand how striking is not practical in self defense? I understand what you are saying about the legal issues but I would rather be charged for injuring someone than be drinking through a straw for the rest of my life.

I love Ju-Jitsu and think a lot of it, but given a lot of it is ground work, its not something you do in the street. As soon as you get on the floor with someone his mate gets to stamp and kick you in the face.

Aye, that's the only drawback with Muay Thai, it's not a self-defence art.

Brazillian, rolling, grappling and submission. If only the words female and bikini were involved in that paragraph, it would have been perfect. hehe

Regarding martial arts, up this way self defence via submission isnt an option really. (this too was what we were talking about last night). Up this way, if someone comes for you, basically run or end it are your two options. Getting someone in to a submissive position on the ground only opens your back up to being stabbed by their mate(s) in this city.
