I love both of these.

Im sorry to say I dont own any of the commerotaive plates off the back of the radio times, but I sky+ the hell out of these and watch them back at my leisure. Especially useful series' as there is fk all else on these days if you dont like ice dancing or cooking.

The Sharpe TV series jumped about the first 4 books. Give them a read.

sharpe is the best by far, hornblower is boring, older sharpe episodes the best for action, the latest ones although good lacked the action and ambience created in the earlier ones, storys were better, enemies in the 2 latest ones were watered down as well.

Great question.

Think Sharpe edges it but Horatio is also willing to get his hands dirty.

Not sure there is anything significant in it.

I try to avoid any programme called Hornblower for fear I may catch the gay.

Interesting question, I think Sharpe is definitely the cooler charachter, but I've always enjoyed Hornblower more, mainly for its cast.

I reckon Sgt Harper vs Major Sharpe is a thread of its own.

Both are excellent series, but Sharpe just edges ahead of Hornblower for me, although its a close call!

Sharpe is the better. Hornblower started out as a junior officer, Sharpe didn't.

Sharpe is my vote!

Both are great series and although Sharpe is the cooler hero, they could have spent a bit more on the budget for extras; can't believe we won those wars with so few troops biggrin

O/T, have been collecting first edition Sharpe books for some years now, but the early books are mucho £ yikes

Why have we demoted Lt Col Sharpe back to major? We not including Waterloo?

Sharpe is better, as there's more - and he kicks ass biggrin

Needed more Hornblower films, and significant events in them - like Copenhagon, Nile or Trafalgar. Sharpe had siginificant historical events, Talavera, Badajoz (sp?), Waterloo etc etc

Sharpe had Obadiah Hakeswill,

played by the superb Pete Postlethwaite.

That's why it wins.

Saw him in a bar in Perth WA once. I went over and said "Hello Pete. Just wanted to tell you I thought you were brilliant in Sharpe."
"Thats nice." he said - didnt even look up from his beer.

Life imitating art maybe....

Superb question yes

But, the answer? hmmmm. I'm going to go with Sharpe. Great, great series (the full DVD box set is not very expensive on play.com!) and Hornblower, although great, can be just a little lucky sometimes.
