Lockdown in France

As we are not in lockdown then what's the point of this thread then?
I think Driller has given some valid thoughts about the corona virus and how it's being handled.
I'm a fit working 63 year old a desperate to go to a bar or restaurant.
Those that feel the need to shield then get on with it and leave the rest to get on with life like most French folks I know are doing.
And straight away it elicited the polarised response that usually appears in NP&E!I think Driller has given some valid thoughts about the corona virus and how it's being handled.

If that style continues it can have the effect that often useful bits of info are lost in the background while the argument becomes the main part of the thread.
No we aren't currently in lockdown, but there are still restrictions here which are subject to change.
I think that the thread still has validity whereby interested folks can pick up on changes that they may not be aware of either due to language reasons or that at the mo they aren't in France so don't hear / read it in their news sources.

Well, I am an unthinking Zombie then but I am also just shy of 77 and with two cardiac problems whilst my wife is 74 and has a thrombosis problem. I would also make the point that smokers have the choice not to smoke but they choose to despite knowing the risks whereas you, or I, could be infected with Covid without knowing where it came from. Looking at the stats for the UK and NZ two days ago, there have been 1767 deaths in the UK and 5 in NZ per 1m population. I imagine this illustrates the difference between cavalier about Covid and observing the restrictions. On balance I hope to continue to be an unthinking Zombie in this world for a few more years rather than being very clever but dead!!
Sorry Rushjob, I didn’t mean to derail the thread-on the contrary I have avoiding engaging with someone for that very reason. But just to reply to Mike above:Mike my “unthinking zombie” comment was specifically NOT directed at folk like you and I regret that you felt targeted by it. As I said above, if you’re older and or medically fragile then you absolutely need to be protected. You are unfortunately the ones at risk.
But it is enough for you to protect yourself with mask wearing and social distancing. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to restrict the 99% who are not vulnerable in exactly the same way that we don’t restrict the whole population in the management of immuno-compromised people.
We are dismantling people’s lives and livelihoods and creating misery for nothing.
Thanks for your comment Magooagain, it’s nice to hear the voice of reason!

I have English friends living in France, they've been living a secluded, simple lifestyle there for 20 years and are now in their mid 60s.
How is the vaccine roll out going in (rural) France ? Here in the UK we appear to be steaming ahead, steadily ticking off the at risk groups and elderly people and are now vaccinating those in their 60s. Is similar progress being made in France ?

Very poorly!
It is why i am seriously considering retuning to the UK. We are in the 65 - 75 age group so can only receive Pfizer 3-weeks apart. The AZ vaccine can only be given to under 65 - so much for freedom of choice.
A French vaccine tracker is currently suggesting that we will be vaccinated somewhere between August and March next year. At the current rate it will be 2026 before France achieves what Boris is currently boasting will be achieved by July this year.
Meanwhile M Macron is recommending that 5% of France’s vaccines should be distributed to poorer counties.
I live in Saumur. It is currently half term so the start of week 3 of a 6-week event. The car parks in town are full of 95, 78 & 75 cars plus a wedge of Camping cars. The curfew now ensures that supermarkets are gridlocked at 5pm. Nice is in full lockdown and the east of the country has a growing problem with new variants.
The economy is bouncing along on the bottom, but it is not clear how many bars and restaurants will survive when / if restrictions are lifted and handouts dry-up.
In short, the whole strategy is an utter mess
One of the issues, we are told, is that in a largely unvaccinated population, the virus will mutate again - and that threatens the previously vaccinated groups as a mutation could defeat previously vaccinated groups. And that seems to be the argument for vaccinating as many as possible as quickly as possible.
A related issue is that we are waiting to hear about is if the vaccines will suppress transmission. Vaccinated Brits visiting other countries and potentially spreading the virus amongst those who are not vaccinated could be a difficult political issue.

I heard on the BBC News this morning that a Scottish report has just been released of the first comparative test results between the Pfiizer and Astra Zenica vaccines after 4 weeks. It shows that the Pfizer vaccine was 85% effective and the Astra Zenica vaccine was 94% effective. If I heard all this correctly and these figures are accurate then one wonders why use of the AZ vaccine is being restricted as it is!!
The original restriction is because they said there wasn't enough data on people over 65 in the original trials. They're not saying that it isn't effective or that it's dangerous, just that there isn't evidence that it effective. Presumably as more data becomes available the position will be reassessed. Fatt McMissile said:
The restriction to under 65s came during the AZ supply row and gave rise to a belief that it wasn't as good as the PB. Methinks it was a means of addressing the shortfall by reducing the demand, but I may be just an old cynic.
I feel pretty certain that it does come down to petty politics. The EMA approved it for use, for anyone. However, France has 21 QANGO bodies providing medical and scientific advice who can make stuff up as they go along, unchallenged.
There has also been regular briefing against AZ, to such an extent that they cant get enough patients to have it. Apparently you can book an RDV in Rennes for the following day, take-up is so low.
There have been lots of reports of healthy Care-workers, Police and Sappers complaining about after effects.
I now don't know any friends in the UK who are over 60 and have not had a first injection. All those who have had the AZ vaccine have had shivers, aches and pains for up to 24hrs afterwards, whereas those that have had the Pfizer have had none.
I would be more than happy to have an AZ vaccine, if only i was given a free choice. I would also happily drive to Rennes for the privilege. Our local news-sheet reported the Mairie saying that they are currently booked up until July for over 75s - and we all know there wont be many done between 14th and September.
My small town in Cheshire has a 12-stream vaccination centre, that is run like clockwork, its supervised by just one doctor, everyone else is a volunteer.
Apparently booking by phone is the route to follow at the moment. Despite the online booking service consistently reporting no slots for 28 days, OH blitzed the phone line this morning and got my PB rendezvous in Vannes for Friday of next week.
Leads me to believe that it won't be too long before vaccination of the next age group begins.
I haven't watched it yet, but there's a good explanation of the fundamental difference between the vaccines here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35Idb_lCU4o&ab... .
Courage.

Whenever I get the chance for a vaccination,I'm still not sure I want it. Maybe I need to look more into all the info of the choices etc.
It's certainly slowed down in my area. Although it seems all elderly home folks have had it and most 75+ year olds.
Sorry to de-rail the lockdown thread.

Perhaps you do need to do more research. Only a fool would decline. It's certainly slowed down in my area. Although it seems all elderly home folks have had it and most 75+ year olds.

The more I see France messing up their roll-out, the more I feel like selling up. Blaming the failure to suppress C19 on the three factors of bad weather, lack of herd immunity and the English variant (all as per the Dordogne’s justification) is simply crass mismanagement.

Currently in Scotland, but want to get back to proper retirement in 06 ASAP. I’ve had both jabs here, and can’t believe I’m still reading the situation is this poor at home:Edited by Skyman on Tuesday 23 February 21:43

Another lockdown is taking place in many areas of the Alpes-Maritimes this weekend, from 6pm this evening through until Monday at 6am. As during last weekend, essential shopping is allowed and a number of other stores will be open. Exercise is permitted for one hour no more than 5 kilometres from your home and the walking of pets is allowed. People can also attend medical appointments.
Because yeah, the virus is only out at weekends, and the vaccine situation is appalling.Hi all, hope you are all well and keeping safe under your present restrictions, we are waiting for our second jab here in Blackpool. We have not booked any trips this year May or September as our French Motor Club or waiting to see what happens with Covid and I do not think there will be any car shows as it all seems to be a little risky. Cheers all and hope for better days.

Which is not great. Especially for me, as sadly after 3 years in France with work, I'll be heading back to the UK end of April for good (and really don't want to quarantine in a hotel with a nearly 3 year old for 10 days).
Plus it's hard enough trying to find somewhere to live in the UK when you cant visit. Ah well.
C'est la vie
