What can't I buy in France and should bring from UK?

I know she tried making it with molasses but it wasn't the same apparently. She holds the Chef's Professional Certificate as well as the Patisserie Diploma so I don't argue when it comes to food, she really does know her stuff! I don't think I've ever seen any of the outlets you mentioned down here in the deep south, we do have Super U though which is the the same group so will investigate, thanks for the tip!

I agree Mike, but don't you sometimes yearn for a certain taste? I love a good Comté, but the price is several times the price of a good cheddar from Auchan. And I've tried a lardon sandwich but still prefer a good smoked bacon one, even if it is often the case that I fancy one but never open the freezer make one. Bacon is more used for cooking chez nous, and was last weekend over the breast of the turkey when we had the usual - french - friends to our annual Xmas dinner. Sage and onion stuffing (home made), roast potatoes, parsnips -all of it french - just to make a meal the french adore but have no idea how. When I moved here and served parsnips, the french asked me where I got my white carrots. I said "they are panais", but they had no idea what panais were. They are latterly available, but used only for pot roasts. I can make a good steak and kidney pie and do so from time to time, using macreuse, but macreuse theoretically is also brisket, but damn me if I can get a french butcher to cut and roll it right for a pot roast. When the french come to ours, they want a good dose of english cooking, since a french hachis parmentier is nowt like a good cottage pie with Lea and Perrins in and crême de raifort in the mash. And boy did they attack the cheddar and Stilton last weekend!
We had the exact same situation, panais is animal food only, some local farmers asked why hose food was on the menu And if you give a frenchman a lump of cheddar he will eat it as if it's a chocolate bar Edited by lowdrag on Sunday 20th December 13:28

I was picking up some cornflower an hour or so ago and I saw dark treacle and thought, should I pick some up just in case? Just let me know and I'll put a few tins in the post.Having been here for a while it seems that the only food item I want I cannot find in supermarkets is nice crackers to go with cheese. In particular I really like Jacobs salt and pepper flatbreads and their square cracker equivalents, so I picked some of those up when I popped back to the UK.
Are these really a thing the French don't do, or am I looking in the wrong place? I need something nice to splodge my melty Chaource on.

Jacobs crackers are in Hyper U here, as is - amazingly - malt vinegar now. Great with the shallots for the oysters. Plus loads of bits and pieces such as Oxford marmalade, Lea & Perrins, Paxo, and other things. I'll take a photo next time I'm there. If you have a Comptoir Irelandais within reach they sell Xmas crackers, fruit cake, and even sell the tins to make your own marmalade! I bought a few and it is great. And it's the only place in Le Mans where I can buy my favourite Xmas tipple. No, not whisky or beer - brandy! You must all have noted that in any supermarket there are 5 yds of whiskies and about one foot of cognac, and my preference is Hine. Just one bottle a year mind you, but I do love it - and it's french by the way!. Here's a link for you:-

Bacon News
I am not sure whether this is a new product, or I have not see it before, as French supermarkets have the most bewildering selection of hams..
We were buying this over Christmas from Intermarche and it is near as damn it streaky bacon.
Previously buying the thick sliced Poitrine, we've switched to this. Its a bit thin, but at 1.35 Euro a pop we just double up.
Yesterday I developed a yearning for some Applewood cheese. When I come back from the UK I always bring a big chunk for me and an even bigger one for our chemist who uses it sliced in her kid's cheeseburgers. I've seen it before on Amazon but you have to buy the whole cheese. Anyway, that thread has gone and I can't find it anywhere now. It's four months until the big 60th E-type jamborees start in the UK, so the boot may well be crammed when we come back. Out of curiosity, seeing what is being confiscated by over-zealous customs officers, just what is the situation on sausages and bacon and the rest? Anyone up to speed on this? I remember hiding things in the spare wheel during the foot and mouth crisis.

Our branch of LeClerc normally have them on the fresh meat counter. But each time we have had a lockdown, they disappear. These are usually better than from our butcher in Andalucia, i assume the best ones are from the north, like Burgos Morcillas. When we tried to get some of them shipped, the cost for 24 was way too expensive.If there’s no French supplier is there a website I can use to order it from Spain?
As an alternative, amongst the Lardons, there are packs of chopped Chorizo that work just as well for cooking
