Does anyone on here know what the rules are for custom exhausts going through the CT?

I'm thinking about buying a borla system but obviously don't want to have to swap it over back to original every other year!!

Looks like homologué route is what you have to look out for, with documentation for CT.

From my knowledge after investigating & fact finding over the last few years relating to building & modifying cars.

You cannot change parts of a car. The car has to be as the type approval states. So no to changing wheels, exhausts, etc.
If you do, an appointment with DREAL inspectors will be needed. You will have information to prove your replacement/ upgrade is equal or better to the required design.
So in the case of an exhaust you still need CAT silencer & satisfactory sound level. I don't know if it would be expected to pass Euro 4 or 5, or the standards applying to the original registration date.

However. Will the CT inspector know it's changed. As long as the sound & emmisions are within tolerance. Also there only appears to be 2 DREAL inspection centres in the country, they have 3 month waiting lists. So if you are stopped it is difficult for anyone (police/officials) to verify wether it's wrong or not.

Interesting. That would imply that only (e.g.) a BMW original exhaust can be fitted to a BMW? So all non-OEM parts are banned? That cannot be the case, surely? What about non-OEM tyres, brake pads, suspension, all of which can be bought at Norauto, Feu Vert etc?

Confused....

3rd party parts are allowed because in theory you aren't changing the spec. If you go to a French motor fractures you will find no end of non original parts.
Tyres have to be to the same spec. I had to replace my rear bike tyre. The garage only had a 60 profile, the original was 65. I had to plead for them to fit it as I lived in the UK then & was on the way home. They insisted I changed it as soon as I got home as it was illegal. But you can probably change bike parts quite easily as they don't need CT's.

This sort of thing comes up from time to time.

I think it’s highly amusing when you’ve got a French administrative system at least partly based on the premise that most people will bend to the extreme and probably break the rules. Which is indeed exactly what they do.

And then you get a bunch of British do-gooders following all the rules to the letter and self congratulating themselves on their assiduity whilst everyone else takes the short cut and settles down at the bar hours earlier drinking their apéritifs hehe
