Looking to replace my 20 year old truck with a more enjoyable daily driver.

My commute has gone from 50mi to 75mi and the old truck is just not up to the task anymore.

What are your experiences? Which of the 3 marques' estates have you owned would you recommend?

I did have an Audi A4 that I thought was a great car ergonomically, but would likely be looking at an A6 in this case

Don't know much about the BMW or MB variants, but would want the equivalent series to the A6.

Any reason why your not considering a Volvo V70? For the same money you'll get a much better and fresher car.

I'm running a 2007 merc c class estate with moon mileage. It's a nice thing, keeps on going.

Also had an Audi A6 estate and BMW 3 and 5 series saloons.

I'd honestly say that at 10 years old, it's all about condition and how good the maintenance has been on a particular car.
A good example of any of those three will be much better than a tired dog eared example of the other two.

But imo: BMWs feel nice to drive and good engines. Merc gives a nicer more conditionals ride when just ambling along. Audi was probably my least favourite, ride was unsettled, Diesel engines quite coarse and within a couple of years it just felt like a VW with Audi badges and not worth any sort of premium pricing.

Not sure on exact prices but what about a newer Skoda Superb wagon instead?

That's because it is a VW with more expensive badges, the sooner the illusion is broken the better.

I've got an 05 A4 2.0T quattro estate. In the dry its nothing special, but in the wet it drives away from plenty of 2wd stuff. It is a bit thirsty though.

Or even a Honda Accord estate?

I had a 2004 Audi allroad 2.5tdi from auction and drove it without issue for 18 months. Cost me £1800 inc auction fees. Got offered more than I paid and stupidly sold it. Currently in a focus estate.

What this man says. If you're buying a humdrum car with a middling diesel engine you'll get a lot better car for your money with a V70. If you specifically want a V8 then yeah you'll need to look at the others.

I'm rather fond of the 3.2 I6 V70 if you can find one, very smooth and refined and surprisingly decent economy. They usually sell for buttons too.

Thanks for the responses.

Had not thought of the Volvo, will have a look at them.

I'm in the US so available diesels seem limited to a few BMW and VW models.

Another vote for the Mercedes C Class. I run a C200 Kompressor as a daily and it really is faultless. I average just under 30MPG and see 35 MPH on runs ( Petrol engine )

Live a little miss daisy, on a run you can push the speed a little more if you are confident enough!

He's in the US, so Autotrader links aren't much use.

With that in mind I'd be looking at a 550i or a later 380bhp E500. I wouldn't wish an ageing Audi on anyone, let alone one with a V8.

bks to this V6 tat, let alone dag dag diesels.
