How about do something different? 4G63T maybe? Duratec would be nice also. Scooby flat four with a new rear end maybe?

Or how about one of the Toyota V6 engines? They have been fitted to the MR2s. could only imagine what they would be like in a Elise. smile

Re-build it and come back bigger and better! smile
Definitely wont be re-building the t series

Shame as the engine is a good one and seemed a great idea......just lost patience and two engines due to lack of oil

Could be related could not be, either way i am not spanking another 3k on it wink

50/50 whether i break it or go for something different
Don't give up just dig under the couch cushions and see what you can come up with for a new engine build.. I know the feeling of WTF when all the work goes up in smoke but there is no better car to bring back to life....

So today i managed to spend sometime with the engine, its with Tech1 Performance in Poole as i just dont have the time but more importantly the inclination to take the engine out.

Good news is the head is ok

So are the pistons

And the Bores in the block

But, this was in the strainer for the oil pump

A Big End Shell

So looks like my T Series adventure is done......Its been emotional, expensive and a failure......but was fun when it went wink

Have a k-series over-75 turbo in mine goes like stink, 150hp / with other switchable setting on 200hp which i never use cos its fast enough on roads anyway (for me). Each to their own but the point of the elise is lightweight and sticking cast iron engine in the back seems wrong to me. The K-series (with steel bolts and a good gasket) is a fantastic piece of engineering. Plus just find a crashed MG6 and youll get a brand new engine, with correct lineage to the elise. Also plug-n-play. Anyway good luck and remember you have learnt a lot and half of the work you did was not engine related so not the failure you thik it was. If you have garage space you could take a break from it for a few months and lavish some attention on the missus biggrin

I got a six pint plastic milk bottle and washed it out when empty. I removed the Oil Filler Cap and placed the six pint plastic bottle inverted with its neck in the Oil Filler Location. Asked my son to start the car and observe the Oil Warning Light. After only two seconds, I slapped both hands smartly on the sides of the plastic bottle. The idea being to send a swift pulse of air pressure down into the sump to force oil up the scavenge pipe.
Genius!

Didn't think about that one! smile they are costly and probably hard to find as you need a smashed up EVO for a second hand one.

How about the Toyota 3GTE (I think) engine from the later MR2 turbo? probably find a damaged / rusted MRS kicking about.

Not sure if the Nissan SR20DET or 18det but not sure if they would work mounted transversely.

Oh what about the C/Z20LET from a Vauxhall Astra GSI? pretty strong engines and come with a strong (ish) gearbox to!

SR20 and Toyota lumps are heavy iirc

Plans around the 2.3 Duratec or 2.3 Disi Mzr look favourite

But a 2.0 ecoboost would be a giggle too

Priced up what car was in bits and today I feel this is best option

Had a drink last night after the Wales v Uruguay match and the long of the short is i woke up with a sore head this morning and confirmation the engine i had bought would be here on Tuesday ! WTF

Its a 2000 mile RD9A ECOBOOST engine from the Focus ST will all the bits minus the engine loom and ECU (the most important bits)

Plan is not to use the STD ECU or the Crate Engine PCM package but an Aftermarket ECU. Probably Syvecs GDI as they have done an ECOBOOST before and have a base map

Good news is, so i am told, the ECOBOOST and Duratec share the same gearbox pattern and similar engine mounts

Can change throttle body to cable, but may try to install a drive by wire throttle pedal

Will chuck the GTX2867 on and upgrade the std injectors, only good for 300bhp so i am told.

These engines are direct injection aren't they? just thinking you could use the stock injectors for normal fuel and then add some port injectors with some Nice Stuff (e85, 100% methanol, or other race type fuel) and have the ECU fire the secondary port injectors after a specific amount of boost. Just an idea. smile

Yes they are direct injection

Like the idea but they say these engines will do 400bhp on stock internals

For now that's enough for what I need....possibly

The other reason i went for the 2.0 not the 1.6 ecoboost is its basically a duratec mzr engine

The Gearbox bolt pattern is the same as a duratec, the 1.6 ECOBOOST uses a different pattern

The engine mounts look the same as a duratec, and there are off the shelf adpator plates and engine mounts wink

and this is a duratec

Ecoboost

Duratec

Have purchased a few things

The ecoboost has a balancer shaft which weighs about 10kgs, also takes a bit of power to spin and allows the engine to spin easier. Mountune sell a baffled sump insert and balancer delete kits so purchased this

Essex Autosport have sent over the mounting kit and adaptors for the duratec, may need a little change on the top mount

Also purchased the adaptor plate and silicone hose kit. Adaptor will fit so at least we can trial fit the engine and box in a few weeks time.

Have also taken some measurements for a lightened flywheel but using the larger 228mm t series clutch that held 400lbft on the last engine, rather than the std K series

Have also been contacted by specialist components about engine management and a loom, more on this when I get the ecu but as they supply zenos it's a great starting place.

Idea now is to run the std engine at about 280bhp get it working then go for the 420bhp I'd like next year possibly with a forged engine......or the 2.3 if it's available

Things are going slower than expected, surprise, but works tough and end of year yada yada, anyway

I have still to test fit the engine, hopefully in next few weeks, but i am confident it will go in. The gearbox adaptor looks to fit so i thought i would spend some more cash the wife doesnt know about

So, Simon from Specialist Components (MX5man) has just sent me the Delta GDI4 ECU with a modified Ford Engine Loom. This came with a 280bhp Ecoboost map, from their Engine Dyno and testing. As said before they supply Zenos (its not the same map) and the cost was half that of the competitor GDI ECU's and looms without mapping so its saved me £1500. Plus this will be a great base map to move forward with and should give Factory driveability (y)

I have 14 wires to connect and the 6 wires to the DBW Pedal, plus Simon has assured me he will give all the technical help i need :v6

Had a play with the adaptor kit for the Duratec

The Rear Mount, is i think, is incorrect too but then again i may be wrong

But the adaptor plate fits the engine

But i tried to get it to fit the PG1, and I cant get it to line up. Spoke to the ever helpful Wayne at Essex Autosport and he assures me it is the correct one. I checked their website and it looks the same so will have another go at fitting

Loom is fitted to the engine, have a couple of questions for Specialist Components, and realised that the engine supplier chopped off the injector loom (why i have no idea as it took some skill to cut the injector loom)

Also removed the starter and the aircon unit, now need to find a single crank pulley

Today is a good day

Managed to pick up a C4 K series Pg1 from my mate Tony, who has a magic shed with rover bits in it, cheap as chips and bolted it to the engine

I also spotted a decent sized chargecooler and Tony kindly let me have it for a good price. Will use this with the std engine and it's twice the size of my home made affair
