And the weird pricing continues!

One i've lusted after for months, is still up for sale since September and reduced nearly £1,500.

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Then an older model, more miles, £2k more

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...
The blue one is fab but completely over-priced. There is a black one of similar age/mileage in the classifieds , with AC, hardtop, and forged alloys, for sale privately at £6k less! I guess the dealer have started high to see if anyone is willing to pay a big premium for that fantastic colour.

For me the nightfall blue one at Howards looks like one of the better dealer buys at the moment.

Are the seats in the blue one an optional extra? They are different.
Its a Club Racer version so has lightweight seats.

Only just seen this post so sorry for late reply. Have you tried an earlier Elise's gear change? I have a 2013 one and once warm the gear change is pretty good, apart from sometimes needing a bit of shove to get it into first at a stand still. If you match the engine speed, with a bit of good old heel and toeing when required (very easy due to good pedal positions), the gear stick moves very quickly and smoothly - or at least it does on mine.
I have a low miles S1 on MMC at the moment. I love the car. The gear change not its strongest point. I’m not knocking the earlier cars shift per se, it’s just thee post 04/17 cars have a shift nigh on as good as an mx5 or S2000, which is high praise indeed. If you try, you’d feel the difference and be impressed.

Problem is, all those nice post 17 cars are clustered around £39-£43k. Regardless if new or 2 years old. It’s bonkers. They are rare cars which I guess is helping. The other thing that pains me with the new cars is they are subject to the lunatic envy tax. Lotus surely miss a trick not marketing a base 220 at £3995 and invoicing subsequently for dealer fit extras- carbon, wheels, fancy seats etc- perhaps on exchange basis. That’s within the rules and allows them to sell a car without lumbering the owner with £450 tax per year to pay for 5 years.
I've not driven an S1 or a post 17 car but what I've heard the gear shift of an S3 is a lot better than earlier cars and certainly I can't imagine mine being much better once on the move. I'm just saying that if you haven't already, try an earlier S3 as you might be pleasantly surprised, which will give you more options.

Yup, mine's a 2014 car and the gearchange is excellent.

Definitely-I’ve a 2016 S3 and my gearshift is superb; up there with the best cars I’ve driven.

I had the gear linkage changed on my 993. Had something (amusingly) called a golden rod installed. It’s a popular modification. Makes the change very mechanical feeling deleting the rubber donut fitted as standard. The revised Elise linkage is the same. It also looks slick being exposed. It’s a palpably more satisfying shift than my early car. I’d be surprised if owners of early S3’s couldn’t fee the difference.

Things......
Yes that is a fairly good price although I don't like the darker colours on these cars.

Just wish I could find £25k, i'd crawl over broken glass to get back into a Lotus.

Interesting thread smile

Been tracking prices since 2004 , purchased an Exige S2 2007, stopped tracking prices in 2013 it seems .... and just stared again 2019 ready for my next purchase 2020.

Have prices increased ? sure ! see below. Limited supply being the issue I guess.

Note , Elise prices were 111Rs then the SC, no non-toyota models below.

Hope this is useful for someone .... makes me feel like i should have invested in a few and kept them nice biggrin

... my Exige would have been worth more now with 66K miles 12 years later than it was when i purchased it with 8K miles as the second owner in 2007 ! there is a lesson there somewhere biggrin

Really useful info Scotte ---Thank you
Just a shame that it stops in 2013
What are you thinking of for 2020 ?

How do you and others see the prices of S2s moving ?

Also is the extra money for the S3 justified ?

It would be great if you could up date us on any more recent info that you have

Thanks again

Your welcome Carspath, great to know its useful for someone, thanks for the reply.

"What are you thinking of for 2020 ?"
Currently talking to a dealer about test driving:
- Any S3 supercharged derivative. Love the CUP models but maybe too pricey for me next year.
- Early Exige V6 model, possibly Exige 350 but again pricey and very aware of the 350 clutch issues too.

Suspect I will just be happy to be back in any old Elise biggrin

In addition:

"Lotus’s CEO Phil Popham revealed that a new, conventionally powered sports car would follow in 2020 - and that it would be based on an all-new platform that the company is developing, instead of its trusted but relatively elderly extruded aluminium chassis."
... so it will be great to see what is up next in the range although based on new pricing its could very well be out of my price range, I am in a holding pattern smile

"How do you and others see the prices of S2s moving ?"
Honestly I am far from an expert, really just picked up things from other people since 2004. Production numbers of Elises have dropped away so its only going to put pressure on supply which is my guess at why prices have been on an upward path, maybe that coupled with the demand for classic cars as an investment but its an older model issue. A Lotus factory contact (from another forum who shall remain nameless) has suggested exactly that, limited supply pushing second hand prices up, grab a good one while you can.

A few production stats here, not sure how accurate they are:

Better build quality. You can get parts more easily for newer cars . For me I prefer the S3 shape so yes its worth the extra for me but its a personal preference thing.

Really sorry I dont have any more info, will start up again though now I am looking.

Good to chat to you.

Very interesting thanks Scotte

Looking at those production numbers, I can see why 2nd hand prices are so high... combined with the better build quality, I'm starting to understand why there's such a premium over the S2. One thing I still don't get though is why is this market 95% controlled by dealers?!

This new model for 2020 - is that going to be a replacement Elise?

I've also done a bit of tracking over the last couple of months... exclusively supercharged variants and the lower end of the Cup market. It is not exhaustive and is dominated by darker-colourec cars as I prefer them over the bright ones. Hopefully some find it useful anyway

If any current S3 supercharged owners are reading this and thinking of selling in the next couple of months, feel free to message me

Thank you for those, interesting reading. The one at Leven I wanted has finally gone frown (that was the £31,950 20th Aniv)

Still some crazy priced stuff, 2014 car, for £34k?? I mean it's a lovely colour, but still.

Whereas this seems fairly good (although I suspect knowing the seller he sold it already)

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

This at £28k would be a good buy I think:

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

I also don't think there's a shortage of supply, there's a lot of nearly new S3's around sitting there not selling.

With the current crop of other sports cars and Exige V6's getting older, I can't see a £57k Elise is a tempting proposition for anyone.

Bodes well for current owners, I have a red s3 SC I got from Bell & Cov , I thinking about getting an Audi RS3 so I can take the dog out , but I love the Lotus , nothing else’s looks as special for the money

I drove an S3 with revised gear change last year and liked it a lot. The gear change is now lovely and they feel properly punchy. On the downside they look too similar to a 2001 S2 both inside and out. Same chassis means same tightness in the cabin. I hear the air con pipes still problematic leading to regular, premature A/C failure.

The numbers sold are tiny yet the used values remains really high. The red car at Stratton was bought from a private sale and still hasn’t sold. As said earlier in this thread, when these can be bought near new at early £40’s how are they worth late £30’s at 2 years old?

I spent just under 2 years looking for an Elise / Exige .

My first choice was an S2 , but I couldn't marry up the advertised prices with what I was getting for the money .
I was equally at home with a N/A car or a S/C car .

I couldn't find a car which I considered decent value in a spec I wanted ( bright colour , well looked after )

Started considering other cars ( quite elastic budget ) -- another MX5 , cheaper end of Exige S3 spectrum , AR 4C , lower end of 540C/ 570S .

As this car was to be a DD , I wasn't sure that the Exige S3's extra performance would be used regularly enough to justify the additional capital outlay , and the running costs .
The dynamics of the 4C worried me .
The reliability and warranty costs of the 540C concerned me .

Bell & Colvill advertised a 2010 S3 Elise Chrome Orange , N/A , 189 bhp ,
2ZZ-GE engine car with 53,000 miles and FSH late on a Friday evening on 3/ Jan , and I bought it for £21K the next afternoon .

I hope to collect the car next week , and although it was not the model I was originally looking for , I am very comfortable with this decision .
Particularly so , as I have taken plenty of time seeing what was on the market , and have also looked seriously at those other marques that interested me .

Hope the 2ZZ-GE N/A lives up to my expectations .

My own take home message is :
- take your time before committing your hard earned
- look widely so that there is no buyer's regret
- be prepared to change from what you originally wanted
- do you need the instant torque of the S/C car , or are you prepared to put in the extra work entailed in getting the R variant moving ?
- don't compromise on condition , condition , condition .
- be prepared to make a quick decision if the correct car comes up , and be prepared to travel afar at short notice

The cars are out there , but they are rare ( Lambo production and UK sales numbers eclipse Elise/ Exige numbers !! ) , and I get the impression that owners tend to hang on to them .

My car is factory standard , but it will have one modification -- Jim Valentine from 2bular has made up a 6 inch backbox for the car --- I asked him to make it loud , loud, loud .

Similar journey for me in some ways.
About 2 years ago I started looking for a fun car to enjoy driving on B roads and occasional track day. So, considered variants of the MX5, Caterhams, early Boxsters, VX220 and the Elises. I also considered hot hatches.

After a search, I settled on going for Caterham or Elises. Problem, as a buyer, was the early Elises & Caterhams is that they hold their value so well. are a lot of money compared to cars of the same age. Caterhams, even more so than the Elises!

That wasn’t a huge problem as you’d hope to benefit from that down the line. However, when searching for cars, you find the PH posts where you can see the same year cars for pennies back in 2008! So it did make me question whether Lotus and Caterham were all in the same bubble as other cars.

Anyway, it led me to a similar conclusion to you, for the price difference why not pay a little more and get a car that is substantially newer?

So I ended up getting a 2015 S3 Elise Cup from Bell & Colvill. The usual great experience from Jamie and team. I could’ve gone for a new car or a 2017 250, but I couldn’t really see the difference between the actual gear shifts. I’ve had an Exige with the new open gear lever and the Elise 2015 feels the same to me. I do like the open version. But this car already has a Tubular exhaust which makes it sound like a much bigger engine (can be droney at constant motorway speeds, so needs varying the revs). And the 220 has enough power for me, so I thought I’d save the money over the newer cars.

So far, I’ve done 7,000 fantastic miles in it.

Every journey is special and very enjoyable. B roads - of course, are brilliant. But, I’ve done quite a few Friday morning rush hour trips from London to Oxford - and back - and it makes the journey far more interesting. Just plug the iPhone into the stereo and you’ve got SatNav, music, voice activated text messaging and hands free phone (ok, that last bit is a stretch smile )

I’m so glad that I went for the Elise as it’s such a special car.

Happy driving!!

Good to hear the previous 2 posters have bought cars you like!

An Elise is a cracking thing for road use - it makes anything else feel like a boat.

Funnily enough my buying experience was completely at odds however, I went out one Saturday and bought the 3rd car I saw that day! It was the cheapest S3 SC on the market, one owner private sale with under 8000 miles on the clock.

Enjoy now you've got them.
