A low owner genuine 160 with 78k was up at £17495 on seloc last week. Sold within a week. Cheap car for someone.

I started this thread as I found the sale of my S1 fat slower than I’d anticipated. I still have my S1 111S. A relatively low volume car with under 20k and everything done. I’ve seen two other 111S on the market in the past few months. Similar miles priced £24-£25k.

A few seasons ago these cars sold at this sort of level. The market still seems flaccid. There’s a lovely S3 Cup in the classifieds at £44k. If I was confident of getting strong money on my S1, I think I’d have that.

I take the point about other sports cars being available. The very best Elise S1’s, including under rare GT1 or factory 190, make £25k tops. They start at about £12k so a fair spread.

There is indeed no end of choice at that money if you want a 2 seat sports car and, as said, that £25k sees you into a brand new MX5.

I don’t think anyone considering an S1 is really considering anything else. Certainly not at £15k plus. At that point you have to really want one.

If you want a cheap sports car for some fun you’d have anything from an old Mx5 to a Boxster.

I love how S1’s drive. I keep flirting with the idea of a 220 as air con, cruise and added refinement make it far more viable to go long distance in

But based on driving at the weekend, early on a Sunday when the traffic is light or stealing the odd evening in spring and summer to just drive out somewhere, have a cherry Tizer and drive back, I find myself questioning if a new car would be broadly £20k more fun to drive.

The old car takes some money to make/keep match fit, but it’s not caught in the cruel tractor beam of depreciation either. With a new Elise, albeit rumoured to be expensive, due next year, I’d be jittery a late 220 bought now, even if bought well, is likely to take a residual body blow next year.

Had a drive out in mine today. Sunny but not hot outside. The car is lovely!

The used and new car market seem glacial. O sold my MMC Elise with 23k and everything done for less than I felt it was worth. My pal got his S1 111S for a good price as well.

I definitely wouldn’t advise anyone to sell in this market.

Seems crazy that Lotus still have 220 Elise marked up at over £40k list when dealers are discounting them new/pre reg for under the £40k envy tax threshold.

Why not reduce rrp ?

My current car is silver with blue roof. I’m the 3rd owner in 21 years. Guy I bought it from had it from 2000 till it was mine. It’s only just turned 20k. All standard bar I’ve added some genuine carbon fibre pieces to the interior. The door cards, centre tunnel etc. All in keeping with the ethos of the car and I’ve kept all the original bits. Got a removable wheel as well which has made exit with the roof on easier in my advancing years as well.

I really like it and it’s sorted now but I can’t shake the want for a new/close to new one. It would likely be my last ever new petrol car!

The market does seem flatter than Holland. I’ve got a lovely Boxster S with 18k from new and total provenance. It’s mint but I can’t rehouse it. Hopefully the better weather sees movement.

Having just reinsured my families cars via a multi car policy, the Elise is getting on the most costly of the bunch. Axa were cheap on my Works Mini but wouldn’t offer cover on the Elise on a multi car policy. I don’t think youngsters drive these cars. You can’t link your phone to it, and it’s basic and raw and unforgiving. Not to mention, not fast in a straight line.

A cheap track car is an Mx5 mK 2. Can’t remember the last time I met anyone under 30 who liked cars, who wasn’t aspiring to a Golf R or similar.

It’s a shame that younger drivers won’t experience the delights an Elise offers. The replacement car won’t be petrol either. Maybe stuffing a carbon chassis with batteries can produce a car that weighs comfortably under 1000kg and can steer with some feel rather than just do whiz bang 0-60

I’m a big fan of the S1. Incredible driving experience. In the summer I’m sure commuting doable. The poor demisting, weak headlights, lack of heated rear window, leaks and skittishness in the wet mean I wouldn’t want to use everyday. Getting into it with the roof on is akin to entering your home through a window as well.

I’d like to sell my very low miles Boxster S and my M235. Both great examples full history in great shape. No one has been to see either. I appreciate the lockdown rules aren’t helping but no end of emails on the Boxster. Armchair buyers who perhaps like to know what they think they “could” buy. My point is, market is glacial for the buying of sports cars and will continue to be so for some time to come.

There are some sweet spots in the 4 year history of the S1. Early cars have delicious MMC brakes and are very light. The 135 and 111S have more power as does the 160. For me the least desirable S1 has to be a standard post 99 car. Heavier discs and none of the extra fizz.

I ran an MMc car next to 111S for some time. I have pagid RS pads on the 111S and cut/drilled discs. The MMC brakes car far superior.

I sold my 98 car after a year and swapped to a MY 2000. Both new. Early car drove better.

I used to think hand built meant a higher degree of quality and craftsmanship than something produced en mass by automation. In my experience with cars, this is not the case. Don’t enter into S1 ownership thinking it’s like owning a conventional modern car. Then you won’t be disappointed

We live in a Covid world. Lots of talk on other PH threads about how the economy will crash and cars will lose significantly value.
We don’t know yet how the post Covid world will look.
An Elise drives like little else, other than an Elise. A fantastic car if you want to feel involved in the act of driving. You can buy many much faster cars for less.

For many it’s seems the idea of an old car that is impractical with only two seats, little storage and no streaming, climate or Bluetooth, is palpably NOT what they want.

Boxsters are more liveable and cheaper. Im sure you can get a new MX5 on a cheap lease.

There are some who value that Elise idea, but most already have one. Whilst some will tell you depreciation is low, which it is compared to other similar aged sports cars, they aren’t easy to sell. I paid loads for my S1 111S last year and I’ve spend loads on it since. I imagine I’d struggle to get back more than £20k on it now- if that was achievable.

They are a great drive though.

For context, I think selling any sport cars currently is going to be challenging. The economy is likely wobbly and people don’t ‘need’ sports cars. There are fewer S1 around each year and they were only made in low numbers for the 3 and a bit years they were on sale.

I don’t think they will ever be sub £10k again for something not crash damaged.

If you want an Elise then you want an Elise. I regularly sway between wanting to tweak mine for a bit more power vs keeping it standard vs selling for a post 17 220.

For UK roads there is some pleasure in being able to rev the car out, without hitting bonkers speed like you would be in the modern legion of hum drum 300 bhp cars
