Hey all,

Brand new to owning an S2 elise, and so far much in love with the car.

Got a couple of armature questions about engine/performance upgrades..and this seems 2 b the forum to get such things answered.

1) Is an updated air induction system e.g. Hurricane, worth the money? Other than a improved engine note, what it terms of increased BHP would it approximately provide?

2) I was having a conversation with a MGF owning friend, he mentioned his car has a similar K series engine to the Elise. The MGF seems to come with higher BHP as standard. What stops me taking the Lotus to a Rover garage to get the necessary bits to upgrade? Sorry if this is a totally numpty question(I presume they're just not built to fit) but just intrigued ?????????

Hi

1. The Hurricane will probably add a couple of bhp but the manufacturers rightly avoid claiming any figure because it's impossible to measure accurately and depends on temperature of air etc so rolling road figures mean nothing.
Worth the money? Up to you!

2. The Elise (S1 and S2) uses exactly the same Rover K-series engine as the MGF. The difference in BHP can be attributed to the large number of varieties out there, MGF and Elise come in standard, VVC, and 160hp versions and can be modded up to 190 (or more with turbo/super chargers).
There is nothing stopping you using Rover parts but Rover garages will probably tell you to go away and take your Lotus to a Lotus dealer.

The k series is all about the breathing - for low end performance mods. in th liz the pinch points are induction and exhaust.

on the s1 an induction kit - eg hurricane etc - plus the trophy (mg part) 160mm throttle body - plus new manifold and a decent exhaust - with full de-cat was woth about 15 bhp (roughly)

on the s2 things are a liitle more difficult because of the mil light / engine management job.

I think the mg k engines have different cam profile iirc.

PTP do a conversion for the s2 to about 140bhp - whch is good value - and improves mid range / low end torque so makes it a better drive as well as lifting performance.

I seriously doubt you will persuade a rover dealer to go anywhere near it ! - there is some kind of deal going on (allegdedly)

try www.race-speed.com for performance parts - I have bought stuff from there - good guy - even if he has a penguin fixation !

hth - please feel free to ask
