Joe,

Wondered about the Renesis for a bit. (That is what they are calling their new rotary right?)

One concern I'd have though is how the lower weight would throw off the balance of the car in turns.

As a side note,

Current market info is saying 247hp@8500rpm, and 22.6 kgm (or 161 lbf)@7500rpm.

The original prototype was claiming 280hp@9000rpm. Not sure of what the torque was. I'm guessing pretty similar to current.

If the torque curve is good (as it should be for a rotary engine), you'll have a bit more oomph than from the vtec, but who really knows how this thing is going to work. It is the first real innovation in rotary in how long?

Ok. Was searching for more info on the Renesis and found this page:

www.jimgauthiermazda.com/future_models.htm

There is the same page/info available directly from Mazda, but the font is smaller and harder to read.

The key point is what the heck is up w/ the 1.3L I4?

136hp@3500rpm, and 31.6kg-m(or 229!!!! lbf)@2000rpm.

I'd think something was a mistype, except you can find the same info @
<www.mazda.co.jp/motorshow/english/tech/eng.html>

I must be missing something. Either that, or Mazda's marketing guys recently discovered the joy of crack.

sounds like a diesel. If you look carefully you can see they swapped the direc-D and 1.3 stats around.

And thanks for the rotor support!!!

The K20A project is coming along nicely, albiet slower than I'd hoped. Having to use my Exige for the Dyno work to do the ECU mapping is slowing down the process of building all the production tooling, but it seems to be a necessary evil. Why settle for a mundane 220 HP when, with a little greater effort, we can have 275-280 HP? I hope you agree that it'll be worth the wait.
As to Mazda's latest Rotary effort, only time will tell. The K20A is already making better HP and Torque at a lower RPM than what Mazda shows as their "target
maximums". As usual, we'll have to wait for aftermarket tuners, unfettered by corporate constraints, to get their hands on the engine to see what it will really produce. The revised port layout is certainly a step in the right direction.

According to Mazda, the Renesis will produce 90% of it's max torque from 3k RPM and up.
As for it initially being 280 hp, that was the number on the RX-Evolve, the concept. But after tweaking the car to pass California emissions, you have 250 hp.

BTW, there are rumors of the MazdaSpeed RX-8 coming out sometime after the RX-8 launch. I've heard of number ranging from 300-350hp.

If they can make 90% of max torque from 3,000 to 8,000, then this should be an excellent engine option for the Elise. If you'd like to see a really flat torque curve, look at www.hondata.com. This chart is for the K20A2 Civic Type R engine with no modification except ECU re-mapping. 95% of max torque from 2,500 to 8,000.i-VTEC really works! With just a few simple modifications, this engine makes over 200HP at the wheels, which translates to about 230 at the crank.
Not bad for a stock engine that'll last well over 100,000 miles without a whimper.
