in-car video camera

I bought a digital videocamera, and I would like to fix it to my lizzy...I know people out there have done it...can u tell me how?

I've seen people use suction mounts on the rear window. I didn't fancy that much so made my own up, which hooks under the rear rail and is zap-strapped to the roll bar at the top.

Worked great for pictures, but the built in camera microphone picked up lots of wind bluster, so I'll use a remote one next time.

Just my two pennorth-If I were going to add that kind of fitting to the car I think I'd be tempted to cover the fitting with energy absorbing padding >>www.safetydevices.co.uk/confor.htm<< simply because it could potentially damage a helmet (+ therefore your head !) and a bit of padding costs little. I once saw a scary hole punched in a helmet by a dash mounted mobile holder at a trackday...

Good point, and one which I did try to take into consideration, but there's not that much space. The mount is actually as far back below the driver's shoulder as possible, and is more protected when the camera is mounted on it. It doesn't actually protrude much more than the top seatbelt mounting.

Best system would be a remote lipstick camera on top of the roll bar, with the recorder bit bolted to the floor in the boot.

As I sort of said, a suction mount should be readily available from any (video) camera shop and will do the trick - it just sticks on the inside of the rear window. Loop the camera strap round the roll bar as a back-up just in case it falls off.

Adjustable, clampable mounts are available from any decent photographic store. Manfrotto make one and they're also available from Demon Tweeks (pricey though).

If you've got a roll-over bar you can mount the camera off that? I use a very simple camera mount made out of a flat plate folded to make a four-sided 'box', attached to the roll bar with U bolts. Camera is bolted to the mount using the standard bolt underneath, with a nylon safety strap for good measure. This has been given the thumbs up by MSA scrutineers.

Demon Tweaks do a completely different thing based on a sort of G-clamp onto the bar plus universal swivelly thing to point the camera where you want, readily available but has no strength to it and I wouldn't want one in the car with me in an accident. But still much better IMO than suction cups onto the back window, which sounds like a recipe for disaster!
