Dad is over from the States and we are out in the Tuscan putting some miles in. Driving around he suddenly says (if i can remember right), 'yeah, you can hear the valve gear/cams working....' and I said 'yeah been like that from the day I picked it up, they all sound like that, some people have even quoted 'a bag of nails!'. 'Oh' he says.

Is this normal?

The word 'Paranoid' now springs to mind and I am now thinking, was it there before? If it was is it getting louder?

I am sure that things are fine, but a quick call to the dealer will be 1st on my to do list tomorrow.

My Tuscan 4.0 always had this sound about it. I've done nearly 500 miles in my Tamora with a 3.6 Red Rose and it sounds much more solid and the 'bag of nails' hasn't sounded once. I'm not sure why there's such a difference in the sound.

Tou can allways hear the cams working-its a 'sewing machine' like whir and nowt to worry about. Does seem louder in a 4litre than a 3.6 though

Sewing machine, you got that right.

Got to get a louder exhaust....CCC's may be needed!

Mine is a lot lot quieter after having the tappets set at its' last service. It sounded very sewing machine-like above 3,000rpm before the service - so much so that I kept the revs down for a thousand miles or so (most of the time ).

Setting tappits does help, but ALOT of the sewing machine noise is actually the timing chain and this is an inherant problem.

CCC's really work. I cant hear the engine now, and hence have stopped worrying about it. Now all i can hear is going off.

The overrun on a Tusc with CCC's is so much fun. I was following darty in his 'S' on Saturday and the banging and cracking was just enormous. Have it.....

I was thinking about this yesterday on a drive with the roof off for a change. It really does sound like a sewing machine and has done since I first had it 18 months and 15,000 miles ago. It still makes me paranoid, though I am sure the noise hasn't changed in all that time. Eee, speed six ownership really is a love hate thing.

My Laverda motorcycle also makes this sound, has 80K miles on it and it's unburstable. The reason you hear it more is because there's less under the bonnet noise insulation. In fact i don't think there's any. this is to save weight.

Believe it or not it's also usually the sound of a strong beefy engine. Not the tappet noise, just the sound of the cams working.

Hell guys relax!

My old 4L Tuscan had the sewing machinenoise-my brand new ( OK after France my 6000 mile plus) 2005 T350 has exactly the same noise. Think about it.The SP6 has its last bank of cylinders in the cabin, its as loud as hell, its inevitable that you are going to hear more noise than in a blandomobile. Its just high performance metal doing its thing!
Sheeesh-once upon a time you could hear the induction noise of the carburetors in sports cars as well!
If it was a Ferry people would be extolling the symphonic like sond.
TVR's may be more Rock and Roll but honesly-how easy is it to dance to Janachek

Foot is to the Floor! and I have been assured that the darker blue Tuscan breed is slightly faster than the lighter blue breed!
