Unfortunately, I recently heard the infamous Tap, Tap, Clack, Clack! I’m told it’s the usual finger followers blah, blah, blah……so after my initial shock and horror I began contemplating my options as I’m sure many of you have. I phoned TVR Power to ask them for the parts and they told me that they were no longer allowed to sell these parts to anyone who is not authorised to do TVR Engine rebuilds!!! Has anyone else experienced this brick wall??? I’ve then been told they want between £4-7.5K to fix! Blub, Blub! It’s a bit bizarre…..they sell a car for £50K that’s knackered after just 16000 miles and then won’t even let me fix it! I wasn’t aware that TVR still owned my car?!

It's done just over 16000 miles and I've never used it on the track for this very reason! But...Oh well..I'm lucky it got to 16000 before its first rebuild........many don't!
My local Independent has however offered me alternative....a US V8 replacement with 460hp! Anyone ever heard of a Tuscan having anything like this done to it before??? I’m a little sceptical……

Hmm, this is a September 03 car with a finger follower issue. I don't think I have seen anybody else post a finger follower failure on an 03 car? I stand to be corrected though.

Not entirely sure that this is legal, I'm sure that theres something in the sales of goods act that says teh customer is perfectly entitled to replacement parts , trouibkle is theres no leglislation saying on how much they can charge.....

New finger followers sir? certainly sir. Are you authorised by TVR for these parts Sir?

No? Well I'm afraid that'll be 10,000 pounds

each

I too have heard stories like this more than once, its like the software and hardware for the engines, independents can buy the stuff, but only a very restrictive high cost, that's how they get away with it, using that small 'loophole', there's no law telling them they can't charge what they like for TVR parts and equipment.

Sorry about your engine. It does seem you will have a few choices of who can do the re-build for you, so maybe a better position for us all than a year ago, when it was either the factory or Power.

Which V8, who is the independant? Price?? DO IT !!

cheers

Hi There,

Gatwick TVR will supply the finger followers for you (at a cost of £500 for 24)but they do ask for your Chassis and engine number.
Are you 100% sure its the finger followers may be worth getting a second opinion on that before you fork out all your money.

If it does need a rebuild there are options that do not mean coughing up 4-11k!

There's lots of people doing parts for Sp6 now .. if you can't get parts from one supplier go somewhere else.

TVR Craft would be first on my list of alternative suppliers.

Graham - When you hear that noise your heart sinks for sure. If its been rattling obviously stop running the engine, you dont want a shim being sucked into the oil pump.

Mine I planned on doing myself, the parts issue cropped up straight away, but the crunch came with not having the correct facilities to remove the engine from under the car. The SOG act, I think must allow for parts up to 10 years after production has stopped, and after reading about this stuff I am certain it IS ILLEGAL for them to refuse parts. If they carry on then people will start to make their own. (I have the Head Gasket - engineering drawing now).

The Finger followers are next on my hit list after some more research onto the surface hardness issues. (Chris I havent forgot)!

Anyhow!

I rang round all the independant speed six specialists, Austec came up a clear winner for me.

They have all the modifications ready to make that six a good one again! TVR power had my engine twice, I doubt anyone would want to give it another chance, so I opted for the known modifications, with crank/flywheel, and damper balacing etc with new valves guides and oilway modifications as just part of the upgrade.

Give Paul Austin a call. Ask him about the findings he has seen recently with the finger follower issue.

I didnt have to worry about getting the car to them, they collected it promptly.

Alex (nice lady) was good with paperwork, as I had a warranty claim with AON (Mechanical breakdown).

Don't let it get you down Graham, the engine never let go at speed, your block is almost certainly OK. No one was hurt either. Its a good bunch on here, with brilliant advice, they make you feel better about it all too.

Yes.. It sucks some dont last, but if you want a chat or rant!
Follow the profile to my numbers.

I am off to meet my dad for a beer, as he owes me one for fixing some stuff today at his work, the phones on tho'

Unfortunately they dont supply parts I tried the first when I needed followers. Gatwick were the only ones who would.

Regrettably no Robert - my 2003 (Aug) had to be rebuilt earlier this summer, thankfully under warranty. 10,750 miles, always treated well etc etc. Have written several threads on the issue - particularly frustrating given its timing, relative youth of the car, and the fact that supposedly as a 3.6li, it was less prone to issues. Back on the road now - through running in, so really looking forward to dry days

Did you get a chance to take a look at the damage before the engine was fixed?

At £500 for 24 that comes as no great surprise, £20 for a follower? It seems there are an awful lot of people doing ok out of this S6 "issue"(with the possible exception of the owners).

My thoughts exactly when they told me the price, however they have you over a barrel and can therefore charge what they want!

No again - although got a letter from TVR calling out the primary issues (basically everything bar engine block and pistons replaced).

Aha, you changed your name. Sorry to hear about your speed , but glad to see its all up and running. Are you coming on the tunnel run on boxing day? Gidney told me you had problems with the car!
