I currently have the Transcend 220 which I am happy with. I now want to have a rear also and have noticed the new Transcend 520 is on the market. Anyone got one and happy with?? What legal pitfalls are out there tho? This would be mounted in the front with the 220 in the rear of a 17 seat minibus so the 520 will be recording passengers. This opens up a new ball game as I am not sure what I have to do to make passengers aware etc? The bus is not a taxi but will be touring. Go for the 520 or save hassle and stick with another 220?

Cheers Ave
A rear dash camera should never be mounted inwards facing inside a minibus, the 520 is not a unit which should be used for commercial purposes where passengers are involved due to the rear camera being enclosed within the front camera.

In terms of legal pitfalls, the dash camera has to have the microphone turned off as you are not allowed to record any audio from passengers (for example a passengers conversation), in addition the camera must only capture within it's lens the road, not angled in such a way where it could pick up any interior attributes such as passengers getting on/off the bus. If you wish to go for a rear camera, the rear camera should be mounted to the rear window facing out the way onto the road surface (which on the sprinter buses is the glass on the rear doors), therefore not hindering any passengers or invading their privacy. This would be a proper 2 CH camera you would be looking at, unlike the 520 which is one unit.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, J
Thanks so much J that is indeed a great help. Need to look into turning off the audio on the 220 and something simple for the rear as costs mounting up.

Cheers

I had my eye on the Thinkware F750 and then the F770 for my previous cars but never got round to getting one.

The requirements have now changed and after a close call on a mini roundabout I’m looking for suggestions for a discreet single camera unit that can be hardwired into a Alfa 4C spider with relative ease.

I guess the real issue will be getting it installed in a way that hides the wiring.

One of the newer wedge cameras may be what you are looking for, they have a very small footprint on the windscreen, the base sticks to the windscreen normally to one side of the mirror, with just the power cable sticking out, I recently installed one in my wife's Yaris and it fitted a treat. Has a small LCD screen on the back so very easy to adjust the lens viewing angle up or down. I bought ours from Amazon.

Hi Giblet,

I would go with a Goluk T1 or Goluk T2 if you are after a small discrete unit. Only difference between the two is that the T2 is black, the T1 is silver. Can be purchased from Amazon for around £100 - with a bitrate of 12mbps, the video footage is crystal clear in day and night and the unit is very very discrete which was why we originally started purchasing it. This is just my personal experience, it's in no way gospel and maybe other users would disagree with this choice, but in my opinion, it really is a great unit for the price.

We haven't done a 4C yet but to give you an idea of how it looks in a coupe, we do have pictures of this unit in a Mercedes CLK250 AMG with a vario roof. We done a front & back in this, despite Mercedes stating a rear camera could not be hardwired due to the folding roof biggrin

In terms of hardwiring, buy a voltmeter and some plastic trim removal tools and set about reviewing some videos on youtube. We are just about to go down the route of producing 'how to guides' for hardwiring into the most common vehicles to help people do this themselves, but unfortunately a 4C probably won't be one of them frown

Thanks, J

Just bought a Garmin 65w as a bit of an impulse buy.

Something tells me I probably should have found this thread first rather than after the event smash

OK, so the Garmin is actually quite good, picture quality good and a good wide angle lens. I like the speed cam alerts as part of the package and the voice commands are pretty useful.

Overall I'm impressed, just need to find a way to hide the wires!

For anyone looking for a FULL hardwire installation video of a front & rear camera (Blackvue DR650S 2Ch with a Blackvue Power Magic Pro) into a standard hatchback vehicle with empty slots where a voltmeter isn't required, please see our full youtube 'How To' tutorial on how to install a front & rear dash camera with a battery monitor device to allow parking security mode to be safely used (i.e. the camera stays on even when the vehicle is off).

We have another video being currently edited which will be a similar sort of tutorial (a full installation) for cars that don't have any blank slots with power available, and the video will cover in depth how to fuse test using a voltmeter.

Most videos on youtube appear to be quick in advising the viewer to tap into a fuse, however most people forget that the majority of vehicles will have empty slots within the fuse box which have ignition and constant power. Depending on how your vehicle is spec'd from factory, there may be more than just a few empty slots available, saving you from having to 'fuse test' with a voltmeter.

Thanks, J

Sorry to be a bore.

Does anyone else have a Garmin with voice control? Seems to pick up all sorts on the radio and takes pictures at random.

I've only used it for a 20min journey!

Having watching the guide in the techmoaner link above, I decided I def didn't want GPS, movement sensor, or parking mode. Just needed a discrete good standard camera. No WiFi or phone connectivity needed, as can't see the use. I have had a dash cam in another car for over a year now, and I never interact with it. It's just there for the unfortunate event that I need video evidence.

So I decided that the A119 recommended in the above website looks just right.
I have one of them, does exactly what it should.

If it's anything like my experience of Thinkware it will be excellent, doesn't appear to have built in power management if you wanted that.

I've lost my dashcam. How do you lose a dashcam?

I took it out of my MINI when I sold it and left it in the lounge at home. Now it's disappeared.

It's a 412GW if anyone finds one!

I know that if I buy another I'll find the 'lost' one. laugh

I spotted this Cobra in Costco last week, seems to be positioned ready for a promo but as it's not normal stock it could be their best price now. No idea if it's any good but it's a dual camera system.

Guys

Needing a new dashcam - had a DR32 for years and its now decided to die on me.

Would prefer one that runs from its own battery if it could be charged from the ciggie lighter.

Have seen some as cheap as £50 but not sure how good they'd be. I would just go ahead and buy another DR32 but it needs permanently plugged into the car ciggie point.

Any pointers appreciated....too impatient to scan 200 odd pages!!

I just ordered my first dash cam - a Xuanpad S3 Mini Dash Cam
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B074QQD5BW/ref...

Now showing as £29.99 but I grabbed it for £21.24 delivered on the "Today's deals" part of Amazon.

Random Chinese manufacturer, seemingly decent spec, cheap as chips - what could go wrong?

I need a new dash cam as my mobius has been unreliable and has stopped working now. Let us know how you get on. It seems to get a lot of good reviews but not sure how genuine they all are smile
