Mount one of these in the car on the headrest, it will 'see' out of the car. Do it after dark so he won't spot it if left during the day.
If it's got IR of any kind surely the windscreen will still prevent it seeing outside the car?

Budget front and rear suggestions anyone?

£100 (ish)

Would prefer something with decent quality from the rear cam and for that to be a separate camera.

Have looked at a few and searched a few links but you know how it is, you end up lost...

Currently got a Blackvue 650 but I’ve sold it with my car so need to find a replacement for my next car.
Was thinking Blackvue 750 but not convinced I need the Wi if element, so was considering the Blackvue 590 which is about to go on sale soon as it’s a fair bit cheaper.
Failing that was also looking at the Thinkware 770 but it does look quite a bit more intrusive than the Blackvue.
Am I missing any others I should be looking at? (Not interested in a screen)

Thanks

I've just put a blueskysea B1W in my car . £59 on Amazon, well, it was ...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blueskysea-Recorder-Rotat...

No screen, uses WiFi, can't even see it behind the mirror from the drivers seat. Seems great.

I've got a Thinkware 770 and I don't think the bigger body really makes it any more intrusive unless you want to mount it completely central under the interior mirror where obviously it would have to sit a bit lower. I mounted mine on the passenger side of the interior mirror on my 2 Series, looks quite stealthy especially when masked from the outside by a £4 sheet of perforated wrap/film that I cut to create the semi blacked out section either side of the mirror (which mine didn't have as standard).

and the rear camera..

Cheers Loco, I’ve been researching all day and plumped for the Thinkware 770 2hrs ago and should be delivered this week.
I was hoping to mount it drivers side of the mirror, for the ability to hide the wire by the mirror housing, but might go passenger side, like yourself, albeit the cable will show, which might make my teeth grate slightly! (I can’t mounti it directly under the mirror as per my Blackvue due to the newer car having auto headlight dipping sensor and cruise thing in the housing)
I do have an issue with top tint on my S5 windscreen, which will be apparent with my next car (another S5) so I’m assuming the lens will need to sit below that, or can it see ok thru the tint do you know?
Cheers
Matt

Don't know about top tint, I suspect it would be better off below it especially for low light conditions where the sensor needs all the light it can get.

I did think about mounting it on the drivers side but a couple of reasons it ended up on the passenger side. Firstly the mounting clip slides right to left to remove the camera so you can't mount it flush against the rain sensor housing on the drivers side unless you never want to be able to remove it. Also on my car if mounted on the drivers side you could see the edge of the rain sensor housing in the vision of the camera so I'd have needed to mount it further out or a lot lower than it is on the passenger side to clear that.

Regarding cables I also like the OEM look and did think about re-routing the wires so they turn 90 degrees across the top of the camera and go into the side of the rain sensor housing, it's possible to do but not got round to doing it and probably won't bother truth be told! If you want really stealthy you could always do what I did with my old B8.5 S4 and mount a Mobius in the rain sensor housing using a lens extension cable, about as OEM looking as you can get but obviously a lot fewer features on the Mobius and mounting like this wasn't an option on my 2 Series due to a forward facing camera in that housing already for the high beam assist etc.

Nice one, cheers. I’ll probably end up mounting it the same place as you based on that feedback, it might go a little higher, then route the cable into the mirror housing along the top half of the unit.

Hi Matt,

S5 passenger side for sure. It's actually an MOT fail now if you mount a dash camera on the drivers side within their wiper clear area. The below should give you a rough idea of how it looks, all be it the unit is a Blackvue DR650S - 2CH featured in the pictures below.

Thanks,

Any advice on a front & rear facing camera in an all in one unit? I’ve got a convertible to put one in & obviously can’t put a separate rear camera on the hood.

Thanks in advance

That’s helpful information regarding wiper area. Makes complete sense and I’m feeling a bit daft for not realising it when i even considered it.
Cheers

It's no good you'll have to circle it - where is the cam there?

I saw this at the weekend and am tempted when my current unit needs replacing. It's a shame it isn't £30 more expensive with WiFi connectivity mind you.

In a normal circumstance, these one bodied dual cameras can never really record anything useful going on at the back, as they simply don't have the detail or the focal zoom required to see all the way from your front window to the back. In addition, a rear camera also needs to be angled downwards slightly, to cover the whole of your rear end, so you can see even a small bumper to bumper accident. If it faces directly out, your camera could actually miss the detail where bumpers make contact.

If you have a soft top, just purchase a front camera, and be done with it - it's unfortunately a disadvantage you just require to take on the chin when you remove a roof from a vehicle.

If you have a vario roof, a proper 2 channel setup can still be fitted, providing it's installed by a professional and someone who knows how to route the wires correctly.

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply. Rather what I feared. Inevitably being a cab the soft top rear window is small, and it's an very old car so most likely even smaller still....

Cheers

Hi,

I'm looking to splurge on a top quality dashcam which has all the bells and whistles such as cloud connectivity, wifi, apps for easy download of movies, etc. also of course want the standard features like good quality video, motion detection when parked, sound recording. I see the BlackVue DR750S thrown around as a suggestion quite a bit, would it do? Or is there something better out there? I'm happy to spend a good chunk of money on it so just curious what the best I can get is.

thanks!

edit: another feature I do want is the ability to disable speed labels on the dashcam footage, do most 'good' ones come with this ability as standard?

That is currently the best dash camera on the market (in our professional opinion). The sheer way in which Blackvue design, research and create their cameras, means the current DR750S has technology within it that will see off any other dash camera even coming close to it's specs, for at least the next year.

Purchase one with a Blackvue Power Magic pro battery monitor device, hardwire it in or have someone professionally hardwire it in for you, and the parking mode will work like a dream based on motion & impact.

Thanks, Jay
