Right guys and girls I need your electrical help. I have just hard wired in my dash cam using the fuse box in the engine bay.

However, I cannot locate a fuse connection that is ignition powered only. I have been using the guide on the below website and every obvious choice still has power to the camera when the ignition is off.

http://www.autogenius.info/mercedes-e-class-w212-f...

It is currently plugged into fuse no. 12 for heated seats, but still has power and the seats do not power on when ignition is off.

Have also tried No. 9 that is for the first 12v socket.

Thoughts????????

I connected the camera to the back of the lighter socket on my CLS (with a fused hardwire kit). Only works when the ignition is on. Probably the same on the E class since they're the same car in many ways.

That is my next option, but don't really want to do that if I can help it.

Did you wait for a while after turning off the ignition, and did you remove the key?

I believe Mercs maintain power to accessories for a few minutes after you switch off.

I wire my cameras into the courtesy light in the roof. Jut piggyback into the switched live in the light unit and bring the cable out above the rear view mirror. Camera will stay live for a few minutes after you lock the car and then shuts down. Neat and tidy.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have left for a few minutes to see if it switches off and removed the key etc. It's not a big deal at the moment, if I cannot figure it out I'm just going to extend the cable to the fuse box in the boot where most of the fuses are ignition activated.

Why not? The hard wire kit should include an in-line fuse. Plus the only thing that would fail is the lighter socket anyway. This is also protected by a fuse at the fusebox. Double protection.

I've just fitted a rear camera and will wire it to the rear lighter socket which I have checked turns on/off with the ignition (immediately btw, not after a few minutes).
