I can't fathom why anyone would bother with spending the money on these units... ?
Because I’ve used Road Pilot, now Road Angel, for 20 point-free 40k mile years ... roll on the next 20 and blissful retirement!
Similar here.

I’d love to find an app that would do the same but having tried CamerAlert, TomTom app and Waze I have to say that none worked well through the car.

If I could solve this I wouldn’t need the Road Angel on the dashboard.
I agree I've tried the apps and can't get on with them, probably just me.
I was offered a Pure from RA for £149 but declined due to the Gem+ problems. I'm prepared to wait a while and see if there are any reported problems from new owners.
I have used RA products for longer than I care to remember and can confirm what others have said regarding their effectiveness.

No, it’s definitely not just you not getting on with apps. I reckon they’re probably ok if you keep your phone in a cradle on the dashboard but that’s messy to me.

The Sunday Times seems to like the Pure:-

Did the £149 include any subscription?

Well having given all the various phone based apps a try I have concluded they are just not for me.
So seeing this today I phoned and ordered one, bearing in mind my old unit was sent to them some time ago having died on me. Of course I still had my details held with them so I bought a Pure at £150.00 plus 2 years subscription.
Hopefully now I can look forward to a further 15 years of scamera set ups being perfectly highlighted as have the past 15 years.

I’m interested to hear how you get on with it. How much was the subscription?

Knocked £40 off the 2 year subscription as I did have some left when the old unit died on me so £150.00. I will keep this thread posted when it arrives, like I have said I really rated these units until my Gem+ experience so I will approach ownership of the new unit with a certain amount of scepticism from the start.

How well does the RA database keep up with mobile cameras?

I’d say very well indeed, never had a problem with the database.

When they introduced the ability report a camera via a button on the Gem with the sim card I found it most helpful. Plus I'd always keep it for future reference.
I've never had a problem with the database, mine was with the last unit a Gem+ that I bought

OK my Road Angel Pure turned up today earlier than predicted, what I nice piece of kit, the box reminded me of my iPhone and the unit feels solid and very well made. The display is very clear and I like the way its connected to the phone too.
I have no doubt whatsoever it'll be up to the job as the units in the past have, of course it's early days but the all in all I'm very pleased with its purchase.

That’s encouraging, let’s hope you feel the same after using it for a while.

Had a full day with the Pure today and I'm pleased. Just one thing which I didn't realise is the fact there is no facility to report a mobile camera like the Gem had. So I sent an e-mail to enquire if it had this feature, the answer was as I expected, no. So it would appear that you have to inform RA of its potential location. So this to me is a negative mark against the Pure. I will send it's location to update the database but unless owners make the effort to do this there could be a gapping hole in the network.

A step backwards which is a shame.

Was the setup easy? Some of the feedback on Amazon suggests otherwise with reports of failures and long delays in speaking with RA customer support.

Easy as anything, the link to the phone is very good. I followed the instructions exactly as stated i.e. charged it for 8 hours to get the battery properly charged. Then went ahead with the set up with no problems whatsoever. It lasted for 4 and a bit hours today with no charge then I just plugged it back in, I did this to measure how long it'll last in case I forget the charging lead
It only comes with one base unit so I have ordered 2 more, plus I superglued the old Gem base as it allows the unit to be set at the correct angle something the new base fails on.
Just to add once logged on to the RA site every question via e-mail has been answered within 4-6 hours.

My first day out on the road with the Pure today, one very positive comment on my way North bound on the A3 noted a camera van on the other side of the roadso pressed the top buttons and the unit acknowledged my action. Later I was South bound and the van had obviously moved, it was further down the road and the Pure warned of active camera van ahead and sure enough there it was so full marks.
Having travelled a few roads where I know camera vans sometime lurk there was no warning so I guess it's just a case of advising RA that they are often positioned in these two areas. There were one or two warnings where I know the area well and there has never been a camera van there so it may be the case RA need an update.

I also had a Gem, and the screen packed up after 2 years. Took RA''s offer of reduced price on a Pure, and they transferred the remains year of my subscription.
The Pure is OK, but not that accurate on its positioning. Several places on M40, M1, A34 etc when it picks up cameras on nearby roads and tells me the limit is 30.

Main problem though is the dash mount. Cornering "enthusiastically" in my Porsche results in the Pure ending up in the footwell, often under the brake pedal.

Road Angel say it is tested under such conditions. I suggested they need a faster test driver.

My detector prior to the Pogo had a similar problem. I hope RA can get it right.

You're absolutely right about its mounting not being able to hold the unit. I tried it on the top of my dashboard initially but after it flew through the two front seats under acceleration I had to place it at an angle on the steering wheel cover.
I have also found the accuracy of its positioning to be suspect too, it keeps displaying side road limits on the motorway and a few camera sites that I know have never been used. I guess it is a case of letting RA know these things and hope for a sensible reply.

I remember now. I had an Origin B2 which had a similar problem, brake hard or take a corner ‘enthusiastically’ and it flew from its cradle.

Hope they get the Pure right.
