MiL wants to buy FiL a dash cam for his birthday at above price range. It’s for a small hatchback if that makes any difference.

What’s the current best option?

I would like to recommend the Nextbase 512 but I just can't.

I'm pulling my hair out with the bloody thing. Initially it would only record the start and end of journeys. Not a great.

After a firmware update the camera now works, but I can no longer download any of the clips via Wi-Fi to any of my devices to see them.

To top it off, the buttons on the camera can be so laggy to work. For example i Press the menu button, 6 seconds later it might decide to open the menu. Half the time it doesn't bother it's hoop to open anything .

I'm probably going to take it back to Halfords.

Is he tech savvy with smartphone? If so I'd get an unobtrusive one like this

Yi Ultra,

Have one in all of my cars, bit bulky, compared to the screenless units, but it's never let me down. And it's under £100, so spare money left to get a decent Micro SD.

Glad I could help! When you set it up make sure the resolution is set to 2170 30fps, the 1080p 60fps doesn't look as great.

I’ll pass on that information - thanks again!

Another vote the Yi Ultra here.

The only questions to consider though, if you want GPS or a standby mode with auto record or if you want front/rear recording.

The Yi Ultra doesn't offer anything overly fancy, but it's a good quality camera that is easy to use.

It's for my 70 year old FiL - it's more than adequate.

Cheers for the vid - looks good!

For a 70 year old, why not just get one fitted. - Halfords have a sale on at the moment, £148 fully fitted including memory card.
