we all know that the DM is the paper everyone loves to hate - however are they really any worse than the offerings from most of the rest of the meeja?

Yes, I know that there are huge number of clickbait articles on their website (I guess this subsidises which means it's still free to look at - for better or worse), but other media outlets also rely on these
Yes they are biased to the right - but are they any worse in their bias than the sun , the express, the mirror, the Daily Telegraph, the observer or the graun?
Yes they've had some distinctly dodgy associations in the past - but I suspect so do quite a few of the others
Some of their opinion pieces are st - but then the gruan has owen jones...

Are they worse? Well, The Times/Guardian/Observer/Telegraph all display opinions but try to be journalistic in the news articles; The Mail is far less balanced. On that basis, yes, they're considerably worse then the other newspapers.

And the whataboutism over "just cos they supported the brownshirts, bet the others were just as bad" doesn't really wash. Yes, they've all been appalling at times, but The Mail does it consistently.

The Sun doesn't count (in anyone's eyes) as an actual paper, and The Express, although a newspaper, seemingly caters exclusively to end-of-life folks and their travails, so they can be excluded (though they display some shocking prejudice as well); The Mail stands alone as a mainstream paper that is so obviously biased that it really shouldn't be called a newspaper at all.

Yes, without a doubt the worst mainstream UK publisher.

The guardian may be bad and politically opposed and I certainly take their opinion articles with a huge grain of salt (as in I don't read them at all)... but the guardian has two redeeming qualities that makes it somewhat better than the Daily Mail.

1. It's more erudite. If you want to improve your mastery of the English language, you can do a lot worse than read the Guardian.
2. Because of 1, they cant be as blatant as the DM, let alone the Daily Express with their lies as the readership are smart enough to spot obvious lies.

The Daily Mail is far more blatant about pissing on your back and telling you it's raining. They deliberately write their articles in inflammatory language, conflate fact with opinion or just bald faced lie. I'm talking the kinds of lies that won't pass a 6 yr old. They design their language and style to get people angry... so people usually apologise for posting a DM link because they do, and deliberately so, insult your intelligence.

That being said, if you've ever watched Fox News... even though the DM is frequently in the same vein, they aren't a patch on Fox.

Printed news is dying anyway. I think the only mainstream paper actually increasing in readership is the Private Eye.

BTW, in a recent pub quiz, I tried to get away with Owen Jones for "fiction author starting with O".

The Daily Mail is "ultra right-wing, populist, nationalistic, xenophobic, isolationist, often hysterical, and notoriously obsessed with immigrants, house prices, same-sex marriage, and claimants of state benefits".

...As well as the antics and petty trivia regarding the royal family, celebrity gossip, cannabis as a gateway drug, conspiracy theories, money, pedophilia and Brexit.

Now how could you possibly inflict any of that tsunami of mindless garbage on somebody without apologising first? biggrin

If you don't like Owen Jones don't read his articles.

Whether you agree with the opinion pieces or not, The Guardian does some fantastic journalism.

I'll read The Daily Mail but I can't even work out what its purpose is any more other than trying to wind people up.

Funny thing is there isn't a left wing equivalent, i.e. a mid-market left-leaning paper between the Guardian and the Mirror (I don't think the I really counts as it's just a small Guardian).

I suppose that is a reflection of left wing views in the population at large, which have never been prevalent in lower middle class society.

As the rest of the print and broadcast Medja are shamelessly left-leaning, is there really anything surprising about the fact the Mail has
a centre-right agenda ?

You know, just for fairness and balance.

Don't forget the "sidebar". Vacuous C list celebrities poncing around feeling self important.

Other than that it's a great read.

Dear boy, left leaning is different to left wing, when you start growing hair on your balls you'll begin to understand adult things laugh

You've been drinking the Gurdian Kool Aid for too long if you think it isn't just the other cheek of the same arse as the Mail.

It’s a hate filled rag. Although at least they’re open about it, others hide their hatred and bile behind fancy language and attempts to sound intelligent.

Think of the DM like Trump. Spouts st to get a rise, knows what their supporters want and don’t hide what they do.
Other rags are more like your Blair/Juncker/Obama sort. Equally vile and stirring up hate but hide behind fancy language and a polished appearance.

Sorry I've no idea about the sidebar - I wouldn't wipe my arse on the Mail let alone read it even if I had terminal dysentery and had run out of bog paper. smile
