Had a Phoenix Gold Z880 fitted yesterday. I think I probably overpaid a bit but it was done in 3hrs, its fitted so discreetly you can't even see it and the firm who supplied and fitted it are reputable and I have a come back if it all goes wrong.
Only listened to it for about 30mins so far on my drive home but so far so good. Does the sound now give me the clear distinction between that my hifi separates at home do? No, of course not. Does it usefully upgrade my car's system and 'fill in' the bottom end? Absolutely! In fact the little sub can overwhelm and I've dialled it down quite a bit. I'll have to play with the settings to find the right balance of sound but I'm happy so far.
I think it's the equivalent of adding a sound bar/base to your TV. You don't get perfection but you do get a huge improvement.

But your last line is exactly why I chose the best budget options I can find all through my builds rather than going OTT with the absolute "best" of everything - if you want excellent/perfect sound quality for listening to music, you really don't start by putting it all into a car!

Bumped, as I'm currently looking for an under seat sub, what have people got?
I've fitted a Pioneer TS-WX010A in my Lotus, and I think it's brilliant. Far more power than needed in the small Lotus cabin, so I had to turn the gain right down. https://www.pioneer-car.eu/uk/products/ts-wx010a
It has a very small footprint, and as it is designed for the footwell it's tough and solid. It's basically also used as a footrest in my car.
