Waze app (on android) and speed camera alerts

I was driving earlier with Waze on in my car and noticed it doesn't alert me audibly for speed csmeras. I swear it used to? I just get a black banner across the bottom of the screen telling me the distance I am from the camera, but no audible cue. I might be going mad but I swear it used to do this? I cannot see anything in the audio settings to switch this on?

Any ideas?

Could it be that your Waze audio is routed through to a bluetooth input on your car which isn't the currently selected source? If that's the case, Waze will be mute.

No, because audible cues for directions come through the car's speakers.... It's strange!

Ah that's interesting, although they said a new version in a couple of weeks, and that was 2 months ago

I don't think it audibly alerts you anymore if you are under the limit...

4.83 is the latest. Worth checking, sometimes it doesn't update automatically.

I have been in contact with Waze and they've said that you won't get an alert unless you're exceeding the limit, which is a little irritating. I've asked to see if they would consider changing that in a future update.

Was going to say this but see you've solved it

I find this feature really annoying on smart motorways when the limit is dropped, you have to be doing over 70 for Waze to alert to cameras, if the limit is at 40 I don't fancy doing 72!

This has been my one major criticism of Waze for years. I'd be interested to know the justification for it because it baffles me.

It's something that should be user-configurable.

If you're NOT speeding as you enter the 'zone' (which I think is a few hundred feet out from the camera) it won't alert you - even if you subsequently increase your speed prior to the camera. It's a real oversight as you only need to drift by a few mph and you won't be alerted.

I would also like the option to increase the notification/warning distance for mobile cameras - they are able to get you up to something like a kilometre away which is outside of the warning zone on Waze.

I had this on Sunday. The mobile paired with the HU (Alpine FWIW) and I selected the BT channel. I made sure the output to 'phone speaker was off. I selected 'alerts only' in Waze. However even when approaching a known camera location at over the limit it did not output the warning via the HU.

I was listening to a podcast via BT at the same time (same 'phone) so I wonder if this has caused it. I need to do another test without the BT podcast but then can I hear Waze without BT selected if listen to music/the wireless?

Have any of you guys n gals tried the TomTom alternative to Waze?

I find it less gimmicky than Waze and a cleaner, more straightforward interface.

The major benefit of Waze is that it uses crowdsourced data in real time to work out how fast traffic is going, where hazards (including cameras) are and road closures and doesn't rely on any human intervention or slow processes in the way that TMC data (for example) does. Does the TomTom alternative use real-time crowsourced data in a similar way? If it does, then it might be worth a look.

I've downloaded Camsam which I will run in the background alongside Waze. Hopefully that'll help!

I guess it all comes down to the number of active users in front of you as to how good they are.

It seems like Waze/Google have theirs own data, as do TomTom, and also Bing/Here.

I wonder if anyone has run all three (or more?) as a side by side comparison?

Google does a pretty poor job on speed cameras though!

Thank god it doesn't warn if you're under the limit IMO, with the number of cameras around it would be a real chore for motorway driving if it triggered just because there was a camera which wasn't going to affect you anyway.
