I'd buy right away a Tom Tom with Jeremy Clarkson voice instead if there was this option. Can you imagine when you enter Wales? or France?

Come on Jeremy!

When I bought my car 3 years ago from Mercedes I looked at the Sat Nav option and I agreee with everyone's comments that this was just too expensive and still is. I went out and bought a Garmin unit at under half the price and one of the best benefits is that I can let my wife use it in her car as well in her car when she's off to some warehouse sale in the countryside.

I was also put off with the fact that these things are generally not easily upgradeable, unlike the portable units (you just go out and buy a new one and hey presto it works) and in some cases due to the wiring in the car you need to do some major electical surgery on it which then invalidates any warranty you might have.

The portable units as highly compelling and when I come to sell my car and someone tries to knock me for not having sat nav, then I'll be more than happy to throw in the old handheld and look for an upgrade on that too!

Just come back from a weeks holiday in Stuttgart.

Hired a brand new Vectra estate, fitted with Sat nav, which I have never had the opportunity to use before...

I must admit, previously I thought they were an expensive gimmick, but I am now a convert, absolutely amazing, we would have been lost without it, literally took us everywhere we wanted to go, straight to the front door almost....

On the subject of Tom Tom does anyone know where I can get hold of a Tom Tom Go 300? I have tried everywhere (Internet and High Street) and everywhere is sold out regardless of what their web site might say!

It is driving me nuts, I just can’t get hold of one anywhere, I have never had so much trouble spending £350(ish) before!

Matt

Try Argos (don't know if they have stock, but they're in the latest catalogue).

Not only is Sat Nav too expensive when built in to a car, it will also date just as quickly as any other techy bit of kit and be difficult to change when it inevitable becomes out of date after a short time.

I'd rather have separate and thus transferrable and updateable kit.

Eh? You 'just' (it costs a fortune) update the software. The hardware may eventually change, but cars themselves are, to all intents and purposes, worthless after 8-10yrs anyway.

TBH, i was interested in sat nav a while ago, but now I can't see the point, too much clutter in the car and I enjoy reading a map, a bit more dynamic!

Well I've been running tomtom mobile (SPV C500) for a good while now, The screen on the phone is adequate and the sound is aceptable...hard plumbed chargers into car dash so all looks neat, just plug in when required...Took me to leMans this year no probs...total cost inc extra charger £170 (bargain)

I've also downloaded speed camera and postcode files and they work a treat!!!
