Short question is this - is there any risk or downside to installing a 3rd party SD card to upgrade the app connectivity/nav in my Mk7 Golf GTI?

Longer version - I'd like to update the software to enable AppConnect and therefore use Apple Car play. It seems to be in the region of £200 for a VW dealer to do this, or £80 from a company I've found online. For this price they send you a pre-coded SD card. Can this be used for any unscrupulous activities or could it do any damage to my existing infotainment system? The car is out of warranty anyway.

Thanks

Chimune

I've upgraded the nav on my 2020 Bussat from the VW website and it was free to do.

It's a bit of a nightmare to find out where to do it, but it was free and it took several goes as connection (their end) was flakey.

From 2023 the maps file size is larger than the supplied SD card and you have to download to a larger SD card which creates security problems. There is a YouTube video that teaches you how to do it.
