Sat Nav for mum! which one?

Hi All,

Getting my mother a sat nav system for her car for her birthday.....she is extremely smart but is deliberately obtuse when it comes to technology...can be a bit annoying, but heh.

So...Which is the easiest to use and clearest to follow sat nav syatem? clever gimmicks etc are irrelevant. I just want something a retarded gibbon could program and that Maureen from driving school could then follow!

Im no expert on these, and many swear by the pda ones, but the 2 on my shortlist for a mum (well for me actually as well) are the Road Angel one (with built in camera detector) or the IIRC Tom Tom Go. More expensive than the pda ones but seem pretty much 'plug and play' with (in the case of the Road Angel at least) touch screen and postcode input etc.

Tom Tom Go without doubt (got one myself, bloody brilliant bit of kit!).

To decide between 300/500/700, go to the TomTom website it explains it very well on there.

Maplins currently have good deals on TomToms (if they have them in stock - they're very popular at the moment)

For ease of use by the non-technical (no slight on your Mum intended) I'd go for TomTom Go as well.

My parents recently bought a Magellan one. Both of them admit to being useless with any gadgets or computers etc but they can both use the Magellan unit without a problem. I've borrowed it a few times and love it. It was about £800, though I think they're now down to about £600. They bought it for a big motoring holiday in Europe and it never failed them.

I tried a friend's PDA one and it told me to turn when I was about 20 yards from the turning! pointless! I presume this is configurable?!

Tomtom go is definitely a good choice. I have Tomtom on my phone, and it's great. The Go costs a bit more, but is much easier to use. No software to install, no discs, os anything like that. You open the box, tirn it on, and poke the screen a bit to choose where you want to go.
