I have heard that there is a gps system that you can install in a race/trackday car very cheaply.

Basically it just draws a map of your lap and gives speeds, laptimes ect. It's apparently very simple but does anyone know what it's called?

Depends what you mean by cheap..

The Race Technology AX22 does everything you mention, but is about £500..

There may well be a GPS only system out there, which would be very inaccurate and probably not worth bothering with to be honest.

I wrote something to do this a few years back, pulling data from my Garmin GPS unit and plotting it, but with positional, vector and velocity data only available every second, when plotted the circuit looked like it was made of lego! Just imagine trying to plot something like Brands Hatch Indy with say 60 dots, it just doesn't do it justice or help get an impression of your lines.

The posher kit, like the Racelogic VBOX use accelerometers and such like I'd imagine, I beleive the way they do it is to combine the data from these to the positional plots to fill in the gaps and allow for smooth plotting. Mind you they seem to keep their technique pretty quiet, so it could be entirely different.

It's also worth noting that on most trackdays any type of timing device is banned so if you get caught with it they can kick you out.
