Hi

Been looking at Garmins among other types of satnavs and after one that can be used behind heated windscreens.

Spoke to the sales at the local Halford, the girl did not have a clue, the guy reckoned TT were great even though they did not do what i wanted, maybe they had great profit ?

After something that will give me traffic master or similiar updates and not need a mobile phone to do it, ie the satnav updates itself as the mobile is always turned off when driving.

point to point, eg type in an address or postcode with the ability to pick up the route if i have to divert due to bad traffic that trafficmaster not pickup

Maps - uk only, but the ability to upgrade if needed is good, no need to have mp3 player or other junk, got a CD player for that

GPS camera detection, but not after mobile detectors as need to know the blackspots (as that's the only reason they put up for ?)

Currently looking at things like the Garmin nuvi 300T or Garmin StreetPilot c510

but open to suggestions as got very lost the other day, driving across country after getting bored of the tractors and most of the signs seem tohave fallen over or were of villages too small for the atlas

heated screens i.e those that act like rear windows on a frosty day don't affect performance of gps

athermic do i.e those that stop the car from heating up to much

The TomTom 510 will do what you want with the optional TMC module.

PCworld are doing this deal at the mo. www.pcworld.co.uk/product.php?sku=390388

Check out this site where I got the link from: www.best-satnav-deals.co.uk/

Good reviews here: www.pocketgpsworld.com/

I have a tomtom one with the mobile phone tomtom traffic, and to be honest the traffic is not amazing, can be useful if a motorway or mainroad is blocked, but doesn't seem very accurate and sometimes out of date. Unless you really want traffic, a tomtom ONE should do everything you want.

The Garmins are pretty good too.

For one with traffic this is nice (my mate likes his):

But this is very nice too - another mate got one and it's a lot more compact than the 510d:

Garmins (and I'm sure the others) have an optional GPS reciever that fits outside the windscreen. Easy to fit, I understand and works well (someone I know had to fit one on his Garmin). Not that I have one, but I think the Garmin is a good buy.

If you do go for the TomTom & TMC, check out this link:

I use a Totom 710 in a Mondeo with a heated screen.

Never had a problem, but I mount it low on the screen on the driver's side.

If you look closely, you can see where the heating elements end...near the edge of the screen at the top and 2-3 inches from the A pillar at the bottom. So there's plenty of 'clear' glass lower down.

Used to run Tomtom on an iPaq, mounted in the same place with a Tomtom GPS receiver on the dash in that corner...again, no problems.

I did try the 710 in the middle of the screen too, and it seemed to be OK
