Am thinking about getting a friend of mine a sat nav for his xmas cos his old one got nicked (junkie scum). Although I dont really know know which ones are meant to be any good. Budget is about £150. Needs to have "safety" camera database in it.
Any ideas?

For 150 quid I think tomtom One XL is your best bet out of the current range, though I'm not sure they have speed cameras or indeed if they can be updated to. Best check. Failing that you could get the slightly older Tom Tom Go 700 or 900 probably which do.

So er Tom Tom then? hehe

The one that he had before was a Garmin, dunno if he would prefer one of those again or not, what with different menus and stuff...

I dont really know much about the sat navs, tend to use road signs and a fairly good sense of direction myself...

Tom Tom or as I affectionally call him "Tim Tim" wink

angel

only had him for 4 weeks and would be lost without him... only thing is, now I don't take a blind bit of notice of how I get to places which is a bit of a worry really

TomTom.

Handy Hint: the irish "Kathy" voice is considerably less aggravating than "Jane".

Got given a basic navman and found it superb. Far better than any one that I've ever had fitted in a car, and about 5% of the cost.

tom tom have far better menus and come with 2 years warranty
garmin are marginly more accurate in europe,

personally I prefer tom tom, better interface and nicer voices (makes a difference)

Avoid the XL if i were you, they have reliability problems, far better is the One GB or One Europe
though if you dont mind 2nd hand a lightly used 710 or 910 are brilliant bargins, you might find somewhere that has a few left over aswell, worth getting as they can be upgraded for free (if you know where to look) to have the new software on, exactly the same as the new 720

that would be my pick

unbiased view: tom tom are no better than garmin, in fact if you research them and try them out properly for yourself you will see that they trade punches with eachother on equal footing and copy eachother a lot in successive models so whcih is the best really depends on what features you value the most. Its very much liek teh odl Canon vs. Niklon debate. Go try them yourself and then decide. Certainly if its reliability you are after then you'll be buying a garmin.

Garmin are the choice for professionals in a number of areas. They also provide navigational systems for the military and nautical industries. They've been in the business far longer than Tom Tom.

Tomtom one on ebay from gps-gb is refurbished by tomtom with 2 year extended warranty. With speed cameras and postcode search. About £100. I bought one myself last week and it works brill. UK maps only though. N.Ireland is included. Brill bit of kit.
