TomTom Map and files install

I hope someone on PH can throw some light on this, I am a little uncertain about the advice from TomTom support.
I have a TomTom one which was relieved of the SD card by a former employee, I suspect it is now in his camera. At turn on the unit indicates put in the SD card, If I plug in a blank card, or the card from a colleagues TomTom one the unit shows a red cross on the card. If I backup from the colleges unit and then restore to the blank card all the data appears to be in place and the newly made card works in the colleagues unit but not in mine. My guess is that the unit writes something to the card to personalise it, can anybody confirm this ?
TomTom support tell me that if I buy and download a map I will be able to install it on the blank card, I am a little nervous of doing that unless installing a map the unit also installs new software.
