I need a TomTom Sat Nav that covers UK and Europe (at least France) that definately has itinerary planning for use in my TVR.

I was seriously considering the TomTom One XL Europe, but have read that it no longer does itinerary planning. Is this correct?

I don't necessarily need the bigger screen of the XL, do want to "plumb it in" to the power rather than use the cigar lighter and the instructions need to be "Loud" hehe

Any advice on which model, and who has the best price at the moment?

Many thanks

I find extra screen width is really worth while.

If you are going to the effort to plumb in this device, surely it is worth investing in the latest tech. In this case I think that means the Tomtom Go 730, currently £300 from Dabs, which has added 'IQ routes' and 'Lane assistant' on top of the already excellent Go 720. Personally I have a Go 920 and think it is great.

As to whether the One XL has lost its itinerary planning feature, this seems most unlikely but I cannot say for sure - it had it quite recently when I played with one in an airport Dixons. Irritatingly they don't list this feature on their site for any of the range - incidentally I upgraded from the Garmin 660 I had last year for this particular feature, and it works reasonably well on my 920.

Thanks for your input waremark. I'm not looking to spend the full whack of £300, as i already have a Snooper Indago, which sadly does not have the itinerary feature. hard wiring the power lead is not a big problem, as i have already done the prep work for the Snooper.

The main use for this device is for PH hoons, where the routes are often provided in TT .itn files (or for me creating .itn files for others to use).

Perhaps i shouild just pop down to Dixons and have a play.

If you want to hear it, wire it through the head unit.

Thanks, that's a thought. I'll have a look into that, although i suspect that the old technology i have won't make it too simple.

If you don't know what you want, and are not a geek, the One is probably your best bet (and cheapest).

Cheers. Not meaning to hijack Blues's thread! My only concern with the One is the smaller screen, is a larger screen worth it?

Go to Tesco/Dixons/Halfords etc - and try them.

Tomtom mobile, don't leave home without it, on a smart phone, and sound either from loud speaker on the phone, or the carphone setup, through car speakers.

As it is also your phone, there is little chance of leaving it in your car for some scrote to smash and grab!

All the maps are essentially free, just load onto your mem. card what you want !

Major roads of Europe, street level of France, Scandinavia, it's all available for free download of net.

The newer TomToms come with the FM transmitter that allows you to 'broadcast' to your car stereo by choosing an unused freqency, so install-wise it should be pretty simple.

I've just replaced my dying 910 (it had a good innings!) with a 920T, which I wangled for £249 from Halfords. The extra £130 for the 930T (for the lane assistance thing and Intelligent Routing) didn't really seem to be worth it - the 920T offers everything that the 930T does, bar those features and a couple of Gb of memory (although the 920T has an SD card slot, currently holding 1Gb's worth of MP3s).

I managed to get my local Halfords to agree to match Dixons' online price (because I could reserve and collect) of £249.94. It's a great little unit and a lot of kit for the money.

One XL EU Does have Itinery planning, but I don't like the way its implemented. I would have expected it would set you on the path to the next destination automatically once you reach each point, but it doesn't - you have to intervene - a royal pain.

The default volume is 70% but can be set to 100% which is quite loud enough for me, but depends how deafening your car is!

I don't think you have found waypoints. You can set each point as either a waypoint, in which case it moves on automatically to the next one, or as a destination in which case it does not move on till you tell it to. In general, you should use waypoints, but be aware that since it does not insist you go exactly to a waypoint it may not choose the route you want if there is a faster road nearby. You have to review the route and check.

I didn't suffer the waypoint issue you mentioned. It got me around the tunnels in Paris with no bother at all.

The volume was fine in my car, and with the roof off... so i suspect it should be ok for most otherswink

Compared to my Indago, i'm quite impressed with this device. It locks on to the satellites quickly, doesn't seem to lose them in tunnels, and loading european speed cameras was easy too.

The one thing that i don't like, is that it gives a couple of beeps for a speed cam warning, and then that's it. The Indago kept on beeping until you got below the speed limit. Is this something i can set mine to do?

Are you using TomTom camera alerts or PGPSW?

For the PGPSW ones I use their *.ogg files for the voices - plenty of warning.

I've got PGPSW, but no .ogg files
