Discussion
I've just checked the website - a lot of the 'half price' bikes are either own brand, and therefore only just about worth the discount price, or limited availability run-out models.
However, there are some bargains, but you need to do an online reservation so you can search for stock locally.
Suppose it's the same as any other company - not every branch will have stock, but at least the website makes it easy to check for local stores which do have it.

to top it all i was just channel hopping and started watching an old fifth gear on Dave, and theres a sponsers ad implying Halfords would spray your car while you wait,
How are they getting away with it?
Erm, because you're mis-interpreting the adverts.How are they getting away with it?
They offer a 'chips away' type service whilst you wait.
I think that this

is also in reference to "sales" like this... get people through the door with some amazing offer, but dont have any in stock, but sell a full price alternative..

advertising a product at a cheap price, knowing there is insufficient stock to meet demand, so-called bait advertising; making customers think that they cannot leave without signing;

I'm going to give up, they just showed one saying they will top up the aircon. I thought they sold all the workshops and had little gazebo tent things in the carpark.
They can do the aircon from the gazebo.My aircon bloke does it from the back of a van.
I know Halfords may be fkwits at times, but they're nowhere near as bad as you're making out.
Exactly people always sg halfords off i myself believe it is over priced and i work there, but at the end of the day if you dont like the services or products that we offer dont go there then you have nothing to complain about. The air con top up can be done using a kit which is purchased in store.

Although possibly the half-wit that moved this topic to sat nav might just believe it to be the case.

Forget the advertising, just compare the prices. I have bought 2 satnavs from Halfords - price pretty much the same as mail order, you get to touch and feel the product before purchase, and if there is a problem you can take it back just up the road instead of having to work out how to send it back. I was even able to turn a unit on in store and look through the menus etc - staff were positively helpful.
So far as the advertising is concerned, they have to be able to demonstrate that they really do have products available in a range of stores at 50% off a price at which they were previously sold (not only offered for sale). However, when they were sold at the higher price they could have been subject to some other offer - and of course it can be 50% off a price from quite a time ago.
I understand that Rospa members can get a further 10% off - but it involves buying vouchers via head office. I have not bothered to try.
