my garmin 2610 will not accept garmins speed camera database so I need to replace it. but I really like the ability that its computer link and Mapsource software gives to specify a route - not just the usual shortest / fastest choice but the ability to specify individual stretches of windey and interesting roads. conversely, I've found trying to plan a route on the unit itself a real pia after using the big screen of the pc

so the question is - are there any other makes of gps that come bundled with decent mapping software for the computer? and a regularly updated scamera database.

tried my sons syrius and whilst it does give scamera warnings its routing facility is imho pretty poor with little of the ability to tailor that you get with garmin.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to subscribe to http://www.pocketgpsworld.com and use their camera database? Personally I've found the Garmin one to be pretty inaccurate.

Since you like Mapsource, why not go to a current Garmin like the 760 or 860?

There are also several freeware programs to convert route files to TomTom format, such as TYRE, or to convert from pretty much any format to any other, such as ITNConv and GPS Babel. I have created a route on Google maps and transferred it to TomTom. Others have mentioned route planning using Autoroute or ViaMichelin.

Sorry, I don't use Autoroute. I know a free utility called ITNConv can convert Autoroute files to most GPS formats.

I would think most GPS's now come with USB connections, since downloading speedcamera updates is an almost universal feature. However, by no means all GPS's have route planning features - certainly from both TomTom and Garmin some models do but some models don't.
