Since V4 is now out they're selling off the Tomtom one V3 for only £70.

An absolute bargain.

That is a bargain! I paid £550 for my TomTom satnav back in 2004.

Back then it was a PDA + TomTom software + GPS module + cradle package which isn't exactly ideal but it did the job, albeit for quite a bit more!!!

Its smaller, has IQ maps and the suction mount for the window is stronger so it doesnt fall off as much

v4 doesn't have IQ routing, it's only on the Go x30 series.

v4 runs v7.2 mapping, not v8 as the Go series does.

v4 has a much bigger speaker than v3 (and also v2, and v1) and a better mount (mechanical suction rather than friction)

it's also rounder and slimmer than the v3 but the mount makes it bigger when put in the pocket (altho it is removable)

personally, I'd buy a v3, use the Latest Map Guarantee within 30 days to get the update to the v7.25 (iirc) maps and do the software update to bring it up to the v4 software spec. Size doesn't matter, really!

I am very very tempted to get one of these for that price! I don't tend to need guidance that often, but in a years time there's a good chance my job will require me to go all over the place.

Having never had a sat nav before, how often do you need to download updates and how much are they?

depends what you want to update...

cameras are £20/year and you should update them every couple of weeks to be on the safe side, but there are other ones available (PocketGPSWorld is £19 iirc and better, but has more false positives)

you shouldn't have to update the maps really, it's like an a-z at the end of the day. it'll tell you all the roads it knows, but even the latest greatest most brand new ones can be up to 18 months out of date.

I'd personally get a v3 one, do the latest map update to get it to v7.25 (or whatever is the most current, I'm out of the loop at the minute) and roll with that, you only get 30 days from turning it on to do the update, but it's not hard at all.

if you did want to download the map updates later, the v3 one has only got 512mb internal memory so you can only have the UK map on it (at any one time anyway), and they usually cost between £35-£45 per year, depending on offers etc.

hope this helps smile
