Does anyone know if TomToms be hardwired in to the car to save plugging them in to the cigarette lighter? Also, can they be linked to the cars stereo for better audio?

In principle, yes and yes.

However, for power you'll need to take a fused 12v feed from somewhere. For audio, you'll need to have an aux input on you ICE.

Just a question of wiring it up.

Do all TomToms come with an aux-out? Don't think my Mum's One v2 does.

No they don't. However, it is possible to add one.

You can buy 12v sockets that somehow attach to the fusebox and provide a 12v feed, then run the cable behind your dash and poke it out the top. The previous owner of my Mondeo did it and it's brilliant, only comes on when the ignition is on/engine is running and the cables can be tucked away completely out of sight when TT isn't in use.

I've also got another cable there to charge my phone if I forget to charge and it's low on battery. A quick change of cable above the pedal box and you're away (though the cables are stored a little "roughly" above the pedal box they are all tucked out of harms way and secured with cable ties.

We just cut the cigarette plugs off of the Tom Tom lead then chopped in to the cigarette socket wires and attached them in. Ran the cable under the dashboard and popped out the top of the dash an straight in to TT unit. Also did the same with the handsfree cradles so the light socket is still free.

Is the cigarette plug not a transformer too?

Not that we have found. Just a direct feed from the pin to +ve of the lead. Think the cradles do the transforming. Well, nothing has blown up yet and its been three years but anything is possible!

hope you haven't done that on the new style USB leads - they do have regulation circuitry in them as they're suitable for voltages ranging from 10v to 30vdc, and regulate both of those down to a standard 5vdc for the unit.

even the old unit output 5v at 2a, so I duno how you've got it working but in all honesty, it shouldn't be!

Just to clear up any confusion, we have Tom Toms that run on HP Ipaqs. These slide in to cradle type jobbies which are mounted on the dash boards of the relevant vehicles. The power leads to these are 12v direct feeds from the cigarette lighter going straight in to the side of the cradles. Before wiring directly in, we opened up the cirarette plugs to check for any regulators, transformers etc but there were none, so we tapped it straight in to the wiring of the car.

I apologise if the Tom Tom units are different to this and any confusion which may have been caused! I take no responsibility for any one who blows themselves or their units up. Always consult a qualified person before starting a job of this sort!
