Tom Tom map updates
Discussion
Had my TT 710 about 18 months now and on a trip to Italy last week it was aparent that the mapping was out of date in many places.
If I am correct Tom Tom expect me to pay them to get an updated map, could anyone confirm this for me.
I fully expect to pay if I need a map for for example the USA, I pay my annual subscription so I get the speed camera updates, but from the advertising when I purchased the thing I was under the impresssion that my UK and European map update was free.
Also last year I could always find a Campanile hotel under points of interest, but these seem to have dissapeared. Didn't take the Campanile book with me so I was stuffed.
Anyone have the answers?

My TomTom came with a 'latest map guarantee' that meant I could plug the device in and for a short time download the latest maps in case the unit had been lying around in the shop for some months.
The time limit starts after you register your product.
If you want a newer map then you're going to have to pay for it. There is no annual subscription for the maps you just buy when you want/need to. I update mine every 2 years as I've found the changes are relatively minor year to year and the correction & map share functions on the newer devices means I can update my own map instead.

I think you are referring to Map Share updates which i think only updates errors that are reported in the map you have by TomTom users. It doesn't add new roads etc, for that you need to buy a new map........I fully expect to pay if I need a map for for example the USA, I pay my annual subscription so I get the speed camera updates, but from the advertising when I purchased the thing I was under the impresssion that my UK and European map update was free.......

I think the sat nav firms are really missing a trick here. If they could drop the price of the map upgrades I'm sure they would sell heaps more, and probably make more money. As it is, buying a new map or two will cost you nearly as much as a new unit. Or maybe that's the idea.
I needed a new map for mine pending a jolly round the continent, but at a 20% off sale price of £50 I decided to stick with what I had.
