My 2 year old TT1 XL has started taking up to 10 minutes to pick up any sattelites and also often drops coverage when on the move. Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and possible solutions as it getting to be very annoying!

Mine's doing exactly the same, more and more often now it fails to pick up a signal altogether, so would be interested to hear people's views too.

Have you used your TomTom appication on your computer to update the satellite locations?

I've not tried this (didn't even know about it) - would this account for the sudden loss though? 1 month ago all was fine.

My V4 TT one is the same..... they are crap.....

I got mine on holiday as my Becker had a hissy fit (windows CE issue)
When I got my Becker up and running, 2 files and a reload of software, I tried 'em back to back, the TT took me to a destination road (postcode search) and the Becker to exactly outside the firm I was visiting.....oh well....
I was also pissed about the crap TT safety camera database......rubbish...
The TT is up for sale now...

I Had exactly the same thing over the last month or so, taking up to 40 mins to get a signal and then loosing it frequently. I tried to update it but it didn't help. and then today it has sprung back to life and has been completely faultless all day.

I have been on the tt web site for help and after Q and A procedure
they have confirmed I need to send mine in for repair, the online help
is very good and they sent a prepaid special delivery envelope to return
it in (I know this doesnt help the fact that the device is cxxp)

anyway you guys might want to try it (you need proof of purchase)

will keep you informed on the repair...

update:
got my tt back they said there was nothing wrong with
the device, I was anoyed as there obviosley was so i emailed
them again and the reply was it was a software issue and to follow
the steps exactly (see below) I did it and fingers crossed it is
working again - at the moment ! been ok for a few days,

I would contact tt before doing this below to be sure your device
has the same problem as mine ,, but here it is :-

" I believe this is still a software issue.

STEP 1 Install the latest version of TomTom Home

If you haven't already done so, please download and Install the latest version of TomTom Home from http://www.tomtom.com/home

STEP 2 Make a Backup

• Reset your TomTom for 30 seconds.
• Connect your TomTom to your computer and switch it on
• On a PC, create a new folder on your desktop and call it 'Backup'

• On a PC, Open 'My Computer', you will see the TomTom as a removable storage device, e.g. TomTom (Esmile, double left click into it.
• Click on Edit -> Select All, then click on 'Edit -> Copy'
• Go to your Backup folder on your desktop that you have created, double left click into it and click on 'Edit -> Paste'

IMPORTANT: We advise you to follow the next steps ONLY if you have made a successful backup of your device as described in Step 2. If you are unable to complete step 2, please reply back to this email and let us know what happens.

STEP 3 Run a Disk Error check

• Click Start > My Computer and then right-click the removable drive for your TomTom device.
• Click Properties.
• Select the Tools tab.
• Under Error checking click Check Now...
• Tick both boxes and then click Start.
• For further information in how to perform a disk error check, please click on http://www.tomtom.com/8324

STEP 4 Delete the Application Files

• Open My Computer in Windows, you will see the TomTom as a removable disk. Double click into it.
• You will see a list of yellow folders and a list of loose files
• Delete all of the loose files. IMPORTANT: The YELLOW folders with their content must NOT be deleted.
• Now we need to disconnect your TomTom from the computer. Please use the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ icon in the bottom right hand corner of your computer to disconnect your TomTom from the computer.
• Once disconnected, your TomTom will show a red cross.

STEP 5 - Now we need to delete the application files from your PC so that HOME will offer them as an update

• Now on your Computer, in the system tray, (in the bottom right hand corner by the time, there is a little red TomTom HOME logo, if its not there, click on the little arrow pointing towards left to show all the hidden icons). Right click on the TomTom logo and select exit.
• Click on Start in the bottom left of your PC
• Now select My documents -> TomTom -> HOME -> Downloads -> Complete
• Please delete the yellow Program folder.

STEP 6 - Update your device

• Reset the TomTom with a paperclip for 30 seconds.
• Connect your device to the PC and turn it on.
• Open TomTom HOME: Start->All Programs->TomTom->TomTom HOME 2.
• HOME will now load your updates (If this does not happen automatically, click on Update My ONE/GO/Rider on the main menu of HOME.)
• Make sure that only the application is marked with a green tick.
• Click on Update and Install.
• Once Installed, click on Done.
• You will now be prompted by HOME to restart your Device, just click ok.
• In the Top left of HOME, click on 'Device -> Disconnect Device'.
• Now please disconnect your TomTom from the computer and allow it to start up normally.

If you get “No Maps Found” on your TomTom, please repeat Step 6 until the application is no longer offered as an update.

Your TomTom should now start as normal. "

I had the same, I updated the satellite positions, and still the same.

Did a master reset and all worked fine from there on... unless it was just a coincidence that it started working when i did the reset.

I have a similar problem that started yesterday, with my Garmin Nuvi 660FM. Is this a problem with satellites??? It is working intermittently, but very annoying!!

Updated the satellite postitions...? No offence but this sounds ridiculous. GPS is entirely self-sufficient. It has an updatable almanac, but all that does is allows the receiver to calculate the approximate locations of the satellites in orbit and thus not fanny about looking for satellites that are not in view (ie: over the horizon). A receiver without an almanac simply downloads the latest almanac from the first GPS satellite it picks up.

In my experience a factory reset (ie: no almanac) SirfStarII or SirfStarIII chipset as used in TomTom devices takes about 10 minutes tops to get a 3D fix, often less.

Sounds to me like the receivers are bksed or there's a software problem that stopping the GPS from working properly. Rest your device, and put it outside in clear view of the sky (not moving in a car) and see how long it takes to get a fix. Then turn it off. Wait half an hour and try again without resetting (hot start). It should get a fix within 30 seconds or less. If not, it's buggered IMHO.

No offence taken - assuming you mean it in it's conventional sense rather than the colloquial "no offence, but you're talking bull" sense wink

It's called QuickGPSFix and just enables the TomTom to get a satellite lock more quickly. Don't know if it works or not as I just update my TomTom every week anyway (with Mapshare, QuickGPSFix and PocketGPSWorld speed camera locations).

Definitely the former. It seems very odd that a piece of software is deemed as required to speed up acquisition time. My Garmin Nuvi 370 uses the same SirfStar chipset and has no such thing. Same for my Garmin Edge 305 cycle computer.

Out of curiosity, what cars are thes TT's giving problems?
I only ask as I had a 172 with the heat reflecting windscreen which stopped my dart-tag working and made the sat-nav take ages to switch on. Had a little clear patch in the screen where there was no coating for better signals.

I think the 'quick fix' part actually refers to quickly obtaining a position fix rather than a fix to a bug.

Anyway, seems bolx to me. My Tomtom GPS unit packed up and started taking ages to get a (crap) fix after it got really hot in the sun. It was an early TT which used your PDA and the GPS was a separate unit on a wire.
